  • It is a redundant waste of money.

The senate is undemocratic and because they don't veto things there is a ton of money that could be spent on healthcare something that it is not because it is being burned on an undemocratic institution. These days there are just corrupt people like duffy doing nothing of consequence and getting payed a ton for it.

  • EXTERMINATE the Senate!!!

They are a waste of taxpayers’ money and a waste of time, the Senate has outlived its usefulness. These people destroyed public trust in Parliament and government. The Senate people hurt the very institution it was created to support. What it does prove is that we do not need to be paying 105 senators $145,400 each to do what the Official Opposition already does – which is hold the government to account. And also in my opinion I think we should abolish the Senate because they don't have the right to have a lot of power in the House of Commons which is too much, and they did not get selected very well.

  • Because its almost useless?

The Senate hardly does anything and way too much money is being spent on them. The only thing they do is doublecheck, edit, or approve laws, and most of the time they dont make a single change within the law. Why spend so much money on something so meaningless? The only thing the Senate really does is collect tax payers money.

  • Abolish the senate

Yes I agree that we should abolish the Canadian senate because after a budget boost from Stephen Harper the Canadian senate will cost Canadians $88 747 958 this year. This will take annual taxes of over 7168 garage families to pay the senate's tabs. The average senator worked only 72 days last year that Is barely 3 months of of 12. Actually 14 senators missed more than ¼ of their few work days. 51 of the 57 senators appointed by Stephen Harper donated to the conservative party. Their lifetime salaries will cost hardworking Canadians $116 000 000. Unelected, unaccountable senators represent the parties that appoint them- not the Canadian people.

  • Yes we should!!!!!

WE need to abolish the senate because it takes a long time for the law to pass in it's timeline I bet if we abolish the senate we would have more laws and the senate could be bought to not pass the law . So we should abolish the senate

  • Down with the senate!

The senate has outlived its usefulness in Canadian politics, it may have been a key idea in the founding of our country BUT its time to consider new ideas for a more modern nation. Consider Patrick Brazeau, recently chrged with assault and sexual assault, Mike Duffy and many other travel expense scandals in which various high-profile senators falsely stated there residence. I think it is time for a change Canada is already a unicameral legislature we may as well drop the senators since all they seem to do is spend money and abuse their undisputed authority. And frankly i disagree that they can/do serve a significant enough of a purpose to remain in their seats.

  • Senate has no applications.

Most of the people who disagree don't seem to acknowledge the fact that the senate has little to no power in creating laws for Canada. It is a more of a traditional thing and has no use. Billions of tax payers' money is being used without any care by many senators, and I can't take that anymore.

  • Because it isn't right

We, the undersigned residents of Canada, recognize the following:

    that there is no place for an unelected, unaccountable Senate in our democracy;

that the $92.5 million a year it costs to run this archaic institution would be better spent elsewhere; and

that appointed senators, especially those who abuse their privileges, do not represent the interests or values of Canadians.

Therefore, we call on the Government of Canada to abolish the unelected, unaccountable Senate once and for all.

  • Not abolished just changed

The Senate may be full of scandals now and be controlled by parties, but it still has a purpose. It provides feedback to the laws the house of commons create. It can be changed that independents get elected by the people and not appointed by the Prime Minister. This removes parties in the senate and then it is creating laws for the good of Canada.

  • Ayo i agree with dis shit

Yeah yeah yeah this shit is hella dope ayy yah lets tell the damn senate to square up cause this faggot aint gonna be apart of this gay ass government no more, I'm straight outta compton my nigga wbu. Ok i worked really hard on dis shit ayyyyeeee love y'all

  • Are you out of your mind?

The Canadian Senate shouldnt be abolished just because you feel they arent relevant enough or because once in a while a few Senators have scandals.... If Senates were abolished for those reasons then Senates as we know them wouldnt exist anywhere in the world.

Im sure that the Canadian senate serves some vital and useful purpose to the passing of legislation in the Canadian government and therefore they shouldnt be abolished...

  • No... Just No

The Canadian senate just as the British house of lords serves a very distinct and important purpose. Within society it is important to possess both an elected legislative floor that represents the people and an appointed legislative floor. The purpose of the senate is to ensure that some of the nations smartest, wisest, and elite have a means of counteracting the general population. Without it we risk having a tyranny of the majority where minority rights are at risk and policies are enacted that destroy the nation from the inside. Without the foresight of particular individuals we may enact incredibly irresponsible policies,

  • I am the senate

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story the Jedi would tell you. It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

  • Let the Senate should be elected by the people for the people.

Those who wish for the Canadian Senate to be abolished, are mostly looking at how our tax money is being used to pay men and women who barely work 100 days of the year. And I have to say that I agree with them to that extent alone. The senate plays a slightly major role in passing laws, but that is only because they have appointed by the PM so in this case they are biased in their decisions to pass the law or not. The people should elect the senate, because as of today the Senate no longer makes decisions to benefit the people but rather for personal gain. The Senate law must be changed, it should have more restrictions so the we will not have incidences like Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin who abused our tax money for personal trips and vacations. Their pay should be reduced unless these people are working 330 days of the year. There are citizen of this country working for every dollar they have and for every tax dollar misused is like a slap in the face. The government must come up with a law the restricts the Senate from whatever privileges they seem to assume they have because of their title. The people deserve to elect a senate that they trust and who will make laws that benefit everyone as a whole. Canada should not longer have a biased Senate, we are going through a recession and the hard earned money i make should go into making more jobs, providing better schooling for everyone and making our country a better place.

  • Just change some things

The senate is fine, it just needs to change how it works( mostly about the money) But other then that, it helps out with laws so we can stay safe. Plus they look over the laws/bills just I case the house of commons forgot something or skipped over a small detail

  • Why the bloody hell should we banish the Senate??? There are a thousand reasons why we SHOULDN'T

The Senate places a large role in the creation of a new bill. They review the bill, just in case the House of Commons was stupid and forgot something. What if they did forget to close a loophole? The Senate would close that loophole for the citizens. Yes, the Prime Minister may be biased, but it all comes down to who he thinks is responsible. He/she is very experienced in picking these people. He'd pick someone who's responsible.

My opponents state that it has no use. However, I disagree. The Senate, like I stated before, closes the loopholes that the House of Commons may have forgotten. What if they forgot to include a highly-important rule in a new law? They have also stated that taxpayer dollars are being spent on useless things (the Senate), but I wholeheartedly disagree. Yes, it does cost money, but THE SENATE IS NOT USELESS. IT DOES MORE THAN YOU THINK.

I may change it; instead, have the people of this country pick FIVE people (one for each region) to represent them in the Senate. Yes, you heard me. Five people.

Besides, we need ALL the provinces and territories in Canada to agree to abolish the Senate. I'll bet my Firebolt that only 10% of Canada will agree. That 90% will not. It'll take too much time and effort to get rid of the Senate, and why should we? It's so useful in Canadian democracy!

  • It does more then we think

The senate has saved Canadians more money then it costed them. The senate passes the bills and if its gone then who's gonna do that the dogs, what will the government be with out the senate, almost nothing the senate checks on the cabinet and the house of commons and with out the senate who's gonna do that the cats, then the cats and dogs will fight then after that theirs no government

  • It just needs to be changed

The current senate is appointed by the prim minister instead of being elected by the people. With the senate being appointed it creates the possibility of a very one sided government that only looks at the views of a portion of the public which is unfair and will anger those who believe that the government is doing an injustice by only looking one way. If the senate was elected by the people then the seats would be more evenly distributed and the other parties will have an equal say in what actions the government takes. This way the wants and needs of the public will be met across the board instead of only in one area.

With the senate being appointed it creates the potential for a very one sided government that many people will oppose to. If the senate is elected then the seats will be more evenly distributed between each party. If each party has a fair number of seats within the senate then the views of each party and the various wants and needs of the people will be met to a more acceptable standard instead of a senate that only leans in one direction.
