Should the Church of Scientology have its tax-exemption revoked?

Asked by: ladiesman
  • Scientology is a cult

Giving the Church of Scientology religious recognition was a big mistake and they can hide behind it; they can abuse their adherents and claim it's religious practices that are protected by the First Amendment and they can amass enormous amounts of money without paying taxes and use that money to benefit their celebrity adherents while neglecting their non-celebrity members.

  • Religion is disgusting.

The moronic concepts that all religions perpetuate are so ridiculous that, with so many people believing this garbage, it proves how stupid the human race is. To allow them to spew their nonsense into the world at all, let alone tax-free is beyond offensive. All churches should be fined enormous fees for spreading lies and fairy tales.

  • No religion should be given special treatment

Just like the UN's motive to spread equality to the whole world, same as should it be applied to religions. Scientology is just one of the many religions all over the world, and why should it be considered special? It's a cult and created by human kind, which is 'made up'. Not saying that some other religions don't but it's quite transparent and ridiculous.

  • All religions should be taxed.

Scientology, like all religions, tax people's money and use it for purposes that many people would not agree with. Scientology simply does this more than others. It was also 100% made up by L. Ron Hubbard and is a cult. Not to say that other religions aren't. They definitely are.

  • Scientology is a money machine

Scientology is functioning like a company under the name of a church. Bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla

  • No they shouldn't.

Even if you think that everything that they believe is dead wrong, it's still a religion. And currently the law states that churches are tax exempt. So regardless of what you think about that law in particular, you can't alter it for one specific group. It would have to be for everyone.

  • If all other churches follow suit

If every other religion also has it's taxexemption revoked then sure, I frankly don't understand why it exists in the first place however revoking theirs while still keeping it for every other religion is simply not fair so it's either all religions now have to pay taxes or none of them do

  • Only if all other churches follow suit

All religions should pay taxes not just one. So to be fair if scientology pays taxes then every other religion should also pay taxes. As gdirulez has said "I frankly don't understand why it exists in the first place however revoking theirs while still keeping it for every other religion is simply not fair"
