Should the government raise prices on cigarettes?

  • Smoking is horrible

It has ruined my life even though I quite 20 yrs ago....Best thing I ever did!!!! As a child my mother smoked. She would be up all night coughing and hacking..Horrible. I work in auto body. The smokers think its OK to smoke if you are in this field. I have to deal with second hand smoke all the time...Horrible. I suffer even though I quite. The demeanor of smokers are always miserable and complaining. Smoking ruins our society. It should be banned altogether

  • Yes, it is an excellent way to discourage smoking

Over 16,00 people die each year by smoking. Thirty-three percent of children under the age of 12 are inhaling smoke and it can develop lots of health problems. Smoking is a horrible habit so many people die over the years just because they tried one cigarette and got addicated. Smoking causes 8,00 deaths just in one country.

  • Raise cigarette prices

To many people smoke. By raising cigarette prices, less people will be able to afford them. Causing them to buy less cigarettes. As we raise the prices, we will be saving peoples lives. Saving the people who smoke and people who are always around secondary smoke. Save lives by raising the cigarette prices.

  • They should not

The reason why is because if they raise the money for cigs and people who need them can be bad because they will spend more money without thinking so they could get there cigs winch will mean they will lose more money but you think what but is that good that means they can't buy more well no it's not that means well they could lose there home and lose money for bills plus they could go mad about it they could get very mad and plus that can be bad plus if they get cancer from smoking they can't pay for it what will mean they die

  • Does it really benefit

    1. A smoker will smoke irrespective of cost.
    2. By increasing prices you force people to smoke poor brands.
    3. How about the influx of smuggled brands in market, all banned foreign companies are dumping their stuff in India, what is customs doing? Esse Lights, Monds, Djarum Black and hoards of chinese cigarettes.
    4. If u want to stop people from smoking ban it completely, but u won't coz u want to earn revenue too.
    5. Lower the purchase age. Educate people. But you won't.
    6. Open rehab centres, but u won't.

  • Health verses cigarettes

Isn't it a crock of shite when the government spends $52.6 billion a year for obesity related health issues yet only spend $21.7 billion per year on cig related health issues you know why because they can't put a higher tax on oily unhealthy living styles do the maths we smokers are spending far less in hospital at taxpayers expense than obese people yet we cop it fair up the back side with the cost yes ablackmarket is alive and thriving and I wholly support it when I only pay $10 for apkt of 20 and I show all I meet how to get the same deal blame for the government not the racketeering

  • The Small Print

The total stupidity of propagandists; raise cigarette prices (AGAIN) --so people will buy less because they're not affordable?? Just like people who drink alcohol will drink less if it cost too much? Like in the 90s when tobacco companies reached an agreement with insurance companies, paying them multimillions (from significantly increased tobacco prices); in order that lawsuits would not be pursued if smokers sued for having cancer. Insurance companies (as always) implemented sharp premium increases & various other restrictions for smokers. So tell me: WHO WILL PROFIT MOST FROM YET, HIGHER CIGARETTE PRICES?? Get real!

  • Government shouldn't take control of one's choice.

You can get high, and other people around you then get in a car and drive... That's ok right. What happen to freedom in America.. There has been many people on shows in their 90's and up that still smoked. This being the case how many others is their that the government doesn't want to be known. That it depends on one's own body how smoking affects them. You seen old shows that everyone smoked in the movies from the 40-50-60's era and are still with us at 80 years and up.. Want to stop kids from starting, raise the age limit to purchase, and fine those who are caught buying for kids! Can't smoke in restaurants but go ahead light up a joint... Really?

  • Fits like fascist

Well well why not jack up tax on just about everything recreation too, hobbies and whatever people like to do or feel they need to do and let's just tax them more if they do something like use their lungs to smoke. That's really really unhealthy now, we should all complain more and put disdain all over the place and let's get with this smart tax.

  • Fascist idea that fits

What a way to go--maybe they can just flip the price up on everything that people do and buy and like and have hobbies and maybe it will come down to those people that really are behind this jacking up the price to discourage smoking. We've really heard it all now, huh. Go smart tax.

  • Poverty inducing logic

Living in a country that has very expensive cigarettes and continued price rises to the point where over two thirds of the cost is taxes it has only caused people who are addicted to a substance to give up more of their other expenditures to be able to have enough to buy them. This is leading to poor food choices and finding other means to make money on the side. There is a marked increase in violent robberies of places that sell cigarettes for the black market and has put vendors lives at risk. It is a bureaucratic accountancy style approach that neglects the realities of substance abuse. For others rich enough to keep buying them or social smokers it is a massive tax grab for no real outcome other than excessive revenue gathering as all the tax goes into the consolidated fund. Encouraging and supporting people by providing services to give up is far more effective. I don't feel they should be cheap but nor do I think they should be priced at extreme levels like they are now either.

  • Stop raising cigarettes

Enough is enough. A carton of cigarettes have went from $15.00 in 1999 to $50.00 a carton now.... I make no more money than id did then... This is outrageous, and not fair at all. They already have taken away where we can smoke too. Feels communistic in the US today....
