Should the minimum age of candidacy for political office be 18: Should the minimum age of candidacy be 18?

  • Eligibility to participate in the political process should be uniform across different levels

In the case of the national political landscape, people under a certain age are ineligible to even be a candidate for certain offices. Having a tiered system in which everyone who is not a convicted felon is able to participate in selection of candidates, but unable to participate as a candidate if desired, is inconsistent and can promote different classes and stratification that may not otherwise exist.

  • The minumum age should be higher.

The minimum age of candidacy for political office needs to be higher than 18. No one at the age of 18 is mature enough or ready to be in the political office and candidates need more experience and time in order to prepare themselves to truly be a good candidate for office.
