The United States should import oil because they do not have enough domestic supplies. The unfortunate reality is that modern economies depend on oil, and there are no comparable alternatives at the moment. Although we may be able to replace oil in the distant future, oil is necessary to avoid a major economic slowdown.
The U.S. should start using the oil it produces to achieve as much energy independence as possible. If the U.S. would keep its domestic production for its own needs and not export oil, there would be enough to begin to ween itself off of the oil from overseas that has affected foreign policy and precipitated wars. By supplementing and developing alternative fuels, the U.S. could reach energy independence.
