  • Yes they should

The US government chose to not continue the space program. It will definitely save money, but the space program should not cease. Private companies have picked up the slack and the government should be willing invest in it. This definitely includes commercial space travel. Nobody foresaw computers or the internet and they happened. Why is it hard to envision commercial space travel?

  • Commercial space travel is free enterprise, leave the government out of it.

The purpose of space travel going private or available to corporations is to invoke competition among the sides, encouraging innovation and driving down costs. The government should focus on goals that would not encourage entrepreneurs such as exploration and defense. Space travel in the hands of corporations and private enterprise would increase a desire for mining and colonization, and therefore finding new sources of minerals and elements.

  • US Should Not Invest

The US government should not invest in commercial space travel because we have so many issues affecting people on the ground -- poverty, crime, drug addiction, corruption, disease, etc. We do not need to focus on outer space. Let's solve these problems affecting human beings before we ever look to the skies.

  • Not now, there are far greater priorities

Idea of investing in commercial space travel is not bad per se, and I would expect US to be the first leader in this, but not now. In case anybody missed it, USA for many years now doesn't have it's own orbital delivery system for supplying space stations, transporting astronauts and similar future activities (please, don't get private toys and half-baked NASA-rip off, NASA-designed, NASA-funded Space Dragon into this, it is decades behind Space shuttles league). US literally depends on Russia for this essential strategic national security issue (and you throw your feeble "it is more economical way" atempts to justify this out the window). That is where money must be invested, the sooner, the better.
