Should the US lower its minimum voting age to 16?

  • Yes I see this as beneficial

I see no reason not to lower the legal voting age. A 16 year old is largely affected by what goes on in the US so they deserve a say. Many 16 year olds have jobs and drive. If we lower the age it may get more young people more involved in politics.

  • The US should lower its minimum voting age to 16.

The US should lower its minimum voting age to 16. I think by the time you are 16 that you should be able to voice your opinion in the election and you should get to vote. At 16, most young people are smart enough and mature enough to be able to vote.

  • Who knows at 16?

Although nobody likes to acknowledge it less than sixteen year olds, teenagers do not have the mental ability to form concrete political opinions nor the ability to be able to ably process such information. Even eighteen seems to be a tad low, as with experience people manage to form political beliefs.

  • Children shouldn't be voting.

The only way I would be okay with lowering our minimum voting age to 16 is if we lowered the age of majority to 16 as well. Voting is for adults, and you are considered an adult at 18 at this point in time. I don't think that you should be voting if you don't have the permission to support yourself.

  • You aren't old or wise enough to make an intelligent political decision.

Teenagers basically believe the last thing they heard. Politicians would take advantage of the younger voters, teachers would impose their own opinions of their students, and it really would just be a train-wreak. 18 is definitely pretty low and 16 just wouldn't be a smart thing to do. Until you're an adult you really can't vote for how the country is run when the laws probably don't even impact you.

  • No, it really shouldn't

We don't want to encourage voting for the sake of voting, and opening it up to a younger age bracket would do exactly that. It'd be a "you do this because this is what adults do" gesture and would come with a lot of voters that weren't fully informed about what they were voting for. Ill-advised.
