Should we ban people with a criminal record from standing for political office?

  • We cannot rely on them.

I think we cannot rely on people with a criminal record from standing for political office. There are some crimes that are not really big but I think we can still not rely on people with a criminal record from standing for political office. Political office is the same as Government office.

  • Having a criminal record doesn't mean that he is unsuitable

If people who said `yes` believe that the politics will be purified by banning people with a criminal record from standing for political office, it is obviously a mistake. As we can see in our reality, politicians without criminal records are also corrupted as well. If we are afraid of corruption or crimes on political office, we should stricten the punishment for political criminals. We should not stop those people with criminal records from stand for political office. They are the people who should be melt into society. The three main roles of jail is punishment, isolation, and rehabilitation. We must help them be rehabilitated, not banning them from having certain jobs. This topic is also under the`double jeopardy`. We should punish the criminal once for one case. Banning them from political office is straight against this law, because it is giving the criminal extra law. In conclusion, I believe people with a criminal record should not be banned from standing for political office.

  • Let the voters decide

Require publication of criminal records if someone runs for office. Let the voters decide whether or not the candidate is acceptable. It is the voters who should decide. If they consider someone with a criminal record an acceptable candidate then they shouldn't be stopped from electing that person into political office.
