  • Its ok its kind of important

I THINK that it is important that we celebrate.Columbus may have tortured native Americans and destroyed their home and I am not supporting those things he did. But think of how we would be as a society if Columbus hadn't made his discoveries. His journey encouraged people to think about humans and the study of life. His findings also advanced technology.

  • He was rude

He tortured and killed the natives for fame and money. He was also a criminal, he raped the natives and stole their land. He also was the first slave trader in the Americas. I understand the pros because he did risk his and others life to find something that might not have even been there.

  • Yes we should celebrate

The pro out way the cons, there are more positive effects than negative effects in this. If Columbus hadn't made his discoveries. His journey encouraged people to think about humans and the study of life. His findings also advanced technology. So I think we should celebrate his discovery of the America.

  • Perspective of the Natives

I just think that everyone deserves a chance to live a good life ans Columbus ruined it for the natives. All they did was enslave them and rape them and everything of that sort. It was wrong, yes he messed up but he should have realized what he was doing.

  • Everyone makes mistake

Let's say, that Christopher Columbus didn't find 'The New World'. What would happen then? Somebody else would've. And that somebody would've probably done the same thing: torture Native Americans. It's inevitable. Can we really blame him? We might think it's wrong now but despite Columbus and other European explorers being perpetrators of genocide, they were people of white supremacy and Christian supremacy who had the mentality that it was alright to dominate, enslave, kill and take from people who were different.

As I said, it was inevitable. We can't really blame him for all the torturing and killing. People had different standards then than now. I think it's an exaggeration that Christopher Columbus wiped out a whole population (Native Americans). He had tiny ships, and not that many men. I don't believe that he killed off an entire generation of Native Americans.

  • Yes to Columbus day!

Columbus may have tortured native Americans and destroyed their home and I am not supporting those things he did. But think of how we would be as a society if Columbus hadn't made his discoveries. His journey encouraged people to think about humans and the study of life. His findings also advanced technology.

  • No Columbus Day

Really, we shouldn't celebrate columbus day because Columbus mistreated the Native Americans to work them as slaves. Before he got there, the Native population was up to 3 million people with a good life that they lived. Then once he showed up and stayed there for 70 years there was no Native people to be found. By them 70 years with Columbus, he treated the people as his workers in his gold mines and use 9 to 10 year old girls as hookers. From all that he did to the Natives, we should not celebrate Columbus Day.

  • He is a phony.

Christopher Columbus, as it turned out, was responsible for widespread genocide; he permitted his men to rape, murder, mutilate and enslave indigenous people. The evil deeds of Columbus far outweigh the few accomplishments he achieved. It doesn’t make sense for the United States to recognize this supposed Christian with a national holiday, so America should stop celebrating Columbus Day. Plus he NEVER EVEN DISCOVERED IT! The Natives and Vikings were the first to find it!

  • Since when do we celebrate mass destruction?

While Columbus did benefit America, and the rest of the world do that matter, as a result of the Columbian Exchange, Columbus' voyage had damaging effects that outweigh the positive.
First of all, Columbus "discovered" America by accident!!!!! !!!ACCIDENT!!! Also, many people died because of the diseases Columbus and his crew carried from Europe.

  • Celebrate a murder,?

I can't think of too many people worse to have a day of celebration for. Hitler does come to mind. He murdered, toured, enslaved people. Shameful that this even has to be discussed. To say nothing about the fact that he discovered nothing, as millions of people lived here already, although he appears to have been of the opinion that the natives were not people at all... Shameful !

  • Columbus Day Celebration Debate

So many credit Christopher Columbus with "discovering" America. Native Americans had already been living here for thousands of years. He just went on a trip to reach India and just happened to stumble upon a giant land mass, called it India, and its inhabitants Indians (which by the way is still a huge problem. They are Native Americans, people, not Indians) While going on an exhibition through unknown waters during this time period is a brave deal, Columbus had lots of help, and could not have done it without his crew. He also treated the Natives poorly, and while the immigration of Europeans to the Americas was inevitable, I think that it could have been handled in a more civilized fashion. For those reasons I say that Columbus Day should not be celebrated.

  • To many cons

In order to celebrate Columbus day, we would have to over look the destruction of a civilization that was more advanced in mathematics, astronomy, and architecture. Further more Columbus may have come up with going west, but he was not the man who was sailing all three ships and we only know Columbus's name. Along with this ,he thought it was Asia!!

  • Columbus Day No

Columbus day should not be celebrated because he wasn't the one who found america. There were already people( Native Americans.) living there. Plus the only thing that Columbus did was he caused death and destruction. He was a slaver and a genocide. He killed a tone of Native Americans to get what he wanted. He also destroyed a lot of land on the way.

  • He is psychotic

He is a mass murderer he wiped an entire race of people off the map he he is the father of the slave trade

  • He's Pure Evil

We should not be celebrating columbus day. We shouldn't be celebrated a man who committed mass genocide on a race of people. He as a man took a community of people who were caring and giving and took advantage of them. The native people were treated horribly because he wanted to mine gold.We shouldn't celebrate this day because he was driven by greed and that greed killed millions of native people.Instead of columbus day we should celebrate the Native American people. We should celebrate them because the centuries of being treated horrible they need a day or even a month to make them feel better about living in america.
