Should we change the definition of marriage?

Asked by: ladiesman
  • Yes yes yes

I had to look this up, Google says the definition of marriage is: "the formal union of a man and a woman, typically recognized by law, by which they become husband and wife". But, this is incorrect. Marriage should be between any two people who want to marry. This should be changed.

  • In the UK

We have already legalised same sex marriage.
Originally it was defined as a man and a woman - actually no. It wasn't a Christian or Jewish invention, it was a legal contract that in some societies did include same sex couples.

    Deuteronomy 22: 28-29
"If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives."

    Deuteronomy 21:10-12
"When you go to war against your enemies and the Lord your God delivers them into your hands and you take captives, if you notice among the captives a beautiful woman and are attracted to her, you may take her as your wife."

    Numbers 31:17-18
"Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."

Is this the book we should define any legal contract on?

  • A new definition is almost inevitable

Given that 19 U.S. states and several other countries have legalized same-sex marriage, our society's definition of marriage is likely to be altered. Marriage does not depend on the gender, but on feelings of love and commitment that both parties feel toward each other. It's time to abandon the traditional concept of marriage.

  • I do not believe we should.

I totally agree with the definition as Google put it from bananaunicorn4. "the formal union of a man and a woman, typically recognized by law, by which they become husband and wife". The biggest proof I have to this definition is two things; the scriptures and the body. Let us say all people become attracted to the same sex. The human race would become extinct. There are two different sexes for a reason and the ability to procreate is only between a an and a woman. Without either, there would be no more of the human race in 100 years.

  • Not at all

Marriage is a more religious term and is really the union of a man and woman. A better term for gay couples is Civil Union. And if they call it marriage so be it. Marriage is not between to couples of the same sex as this is supposed to be under god.
Leviticus 18:22 identifies homosexual sex as an abomination, a detestable sin. Romans 1:26-27 declares homosexual desires and actions to be shameful, unnatural, lustful, and indecent. First Corinthians 6:9 states that homosexuals are unrighteous and will not inherit the kingdom of God. Since both homosexual desires and actions are condemned in the Bible, it is clear that homosexuals “marrying” is not God’s will, and would be, in fact, sinful.

To many people marriage is just being recognized as a couple under a law, but to others especially people who are more religious it is much more to us and changing the definition will be a slap in the face.
