Should we pardon crimes that are motivated by sudden poverty?

  • Yes, very few people want to commit crimes

Crimes that involve theft of some sort are generally a testament to the desperation felt by the offender. When it comes down to starving or stealing for food most humans would steal. Survival instinct dictates that we survive even if it means stealing to do so. Punishing a person for this crime will not solve anything. They are already poor, so fining them is cruel. Jailing them just leads to extremely high jail populations and very expensive prisoners.

  • No,we should not pardon crimes that are motivated by sudden poverty.

No we should not pardon crimes that are motivated by sudden poverty. This takes away all the motivation for someone to do better if they think they can just commit all kinds of crimes and use poverty as a way to get out of it.If they have to be responsible for their actions then they may improve their lives.
