Official or not, English is the language of the United States, and is by far the most spoken - hostorically and in the present. English should be the predominant language in the US, except children who do not speak English should be allowed bilingual courses - for a period. Schools should aim for English, but to ignore students who truly can't speak the language is cruel.
If, as a nation, we were bilingual or trilingual, we could create a common language across the continent. French, Spanish and English are all official languages in North America. If we could decide to challenge our students and teach other languages, by speaking multiple languages in class, we could rapidly spread the right of bilingual and trilingual people to unite the continent.
