Yes, If We Are Talking About Spanking

Children need clear boundaries and discipline. If this means spanking them on the butt when they are about to walk in traffic, then that can be a valuable lesson for them. Parents today are too afraid to discipline their children and now we have an entire generation of spoiled brats who won't listen to teachers or treat others with respect.

  • Yes, within reason.

I strongly believe that the question answers this for itself. I know that people hate to think of other people as objects but let’s face it, that’s how we treat each other. Now, given the fact that if you’re a woman you have to deal with 9 months of nausea/vomiting, stretch marks that may or may not disappear, weight gain, incontinence, etc…you should be able to do what you want with your child. It’s YOUR child. If you’re a man and you separate from the mother of the child, you can get even half of your paycheck taken out to give to the child. Again, it’s YOUR child. Now, abuse is a different thing. Abuse is not intended to correct a child’s behavior, it is incorrectly thinking that your child’s behavior needs to change and the only way to change is by hitting them repeatedly.

  • No.

I believe that parents have a right to teach their child in any way that they please. But the child has a right to their welfare and life as well, so when this is endangered, then the parent can no longer exercise their right. Children suffer physically as well as psychologically from these events and any good parent would know there are much better ways of disciplining a child. I personally don't mind a slap on the wrist to show it's wrong, but when a bruise is left or it's too dangerous, it's gone too far.

  • Physical abuse can't be justified

It's difficult to conceive of circumstances in which hitting anyone - child or no - is justified, short of self defense. In the case of children, getting physical is especially abhorrent because of the trust children place in their parents as role models. The physical scars may fade, but psychological ones remain, and the violence one visits upon their children often sets precedents from generation to generation, creating untold costs for society.
