Awarding the Arthur Ashe Courage award to Zenobia Dobson was a powerful statement against gun violence in America. High School football player Zenobia Dobson was killed in a shooting while shielding his friends that were on his porch. His act not only demonstrated courage but selflessness and is more than deserving of this award. In addition to this, giving him this award raised awareness about important issues surrounding gun violence in our country, particularly involving young people.
By all accounts, Zaveion Dobson was a leader and someone who was active in his community. He died protecting his friends. His mother, Zenobia, accepted the award on his behalf, but also challenged the sporting community and all of us to work to end senseless gun violence. So both of them certainly deserve the award as much as Jenner did.
Zenobia Doboson actions were exactly the kind of thing that this award was designed for. By protecting his friends from gunshots, he gave his life in noble way. This is the kind of thing that more athletes should be doing rather than raping and beating women and using their fame to get out of jail.
No, I don't think that Zenobia Dobson should have won the Arthur Ashe Courage award at the ESPYs. Not because she din't deserve one, but because her son Zaevion deserved it more. But after the speech she gave, I believe that she is the person that can influence other people and make sure that her son did not die in vain.
