The summer break gives students a chance to be kids, have fun, and spend quality time with their families, but maybe it's time for a change. A lot of what was learned during the school year could be lost during these carefree months. A series of smaller breaks throughout the year would allow students to keep their newly acquired knowledge fresh in their minds, and still get the rest and relaxation they require.
In many other countries, for example southeast Asia, students go to school for several months, then take a month off, then go to school for several months again and take another month off. These countries routinely outperform the United States in all areas across the board; if we want to catch up, we should start by switching to their school-break-school-break model rather than giving our students three months a year for their brains to atrophy.
Student summer vacation from school is important and should continue. During summer vacation students have the opportunity to pursue a number of other activities that can enhance their life education. Having a break in the summer can also make the school time more effective when students are not constantly pressured by the demands of school.
I think it would not be a good thing to ask people in school to attend through the summer. People need a break from learning. Grades would more than likely fall if we asked them to do this. Without being able to take a break and possibly a vacation, they will easily get tired of what they are learning about.
