Taiwan's GDP is nearly $500 billion annually. That's more than Austria, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and other independent nations. In terms of world rank, Taiwain is just outside the top 25 in overall GDP. There is one reason why Taiwan isn't independent yet--the overlords in China see the island's independent status as an affront to Chinese regional power. If Taiwan goes, are other regions next such as Tibet in western China?
As small as they are they probably would not have sufficient funds to support themselves in the long run and maybe they should at least give China more time to govern them a little more to their liking and not be as hasty as they are making out to be.
