TGAS- Should female tennis players be given the same prize money as men at Wimbledon?

Asked by: TGASOrr
  • Don't blame the women

It's hardly Serena Williams and co's fault that there aren't enough women to make 5-setters competitive. Let women play 5 sets and show that they are capable; no one ever jumps higher without raising the bar! The 'shorter matches' argument is a flawed one. Is Usain Bolt a lesser athlete than Mo Farah because he competes for a shorter amount of time, or do we just accept that what he does is different?

  • Sexism sexism sexism!!!!

B7 think women work equally hard to win Wimbledon as men do, therefore they deserve the same amount of prize money. The competition is just as strict and they must work just as hard as the men to achieve top place. If they can both play together in mixed doubles, why can't women win equal prize money??

  • For me this one's obvious.

All I can see from the opposing team is "they play shorter matches". Do you think they wouldn't choose to do longer ones if they were allowed? Look, I don't really care about tennis, but it seems unfair to pay people less for their gender. That's discrimination. They could and I imagine willingly would, do extra sets if it earned them additional money. It's yet another case of sports people thinking women are too "weak" to do sports. I really don't care about sports, but it seems pretty simple that you should pay women the same as men, or at least give them the opportunity to play as many sets for the same amount of money.

  • They do the same thing!!

Even though they play for different lengths of times they are still hitting the ball with a tennis racket... Which is the same... It's sexist if they don't get the same amount.

We have an argument against though which is less people watch the women's tennis so they shouldn't get the same amount of money.

  • D3 says YES!

D3 thinks that women should get the same prize money as men because they work equally as hard to get to the top! They have to compete in the same number of matches to get to the final. They should be given the chance to play 5 set matches or men should be given the chance to play 3 sets. If women aren't paid the same then that sends out the message that women are not equal and female sports are not as important.

  • Chicken VS Egg

Anyone using the argument about viewing figures for the men's final and the women's final need to consider the contextual factors leading to such numbers:
Is it the case that the women's final is less popular because the women are less good OR is it that the media coverage and promotion of the men's final is stronger?
As we have seen in the recent women's world cup, when the media coverage, advertising and promotion and sponsorship is present, then the viewing figures increase. In football we have also seen that the women gave as good a game - if not better - than their male counterparts and are now the second most successful English football team of all time.
If the same handling of the women's tennis occurred then perhaps the final would pull in the same viewing figures.
M8 were also keen to point out that men are stronger than women genetically. It seems unfair for women to be treated in response to something out of their control. The pay should reflect the hours of training, commitment, drive, resilience, willpower to diet, etc. which we think would be the same as any of the men.

  • B6 say yes!

Women should be paid the same as men because they train as hard as men. We think they should play 5 sets then there is no difference. This would increase the number of viewer hours which may increase the income for the women's game. Enjoy your strawberries, cream and champers.

  • Equality is imperative

Women train as much as men and are therefore working just as hard. However the average time spent on court for men in a grand slam is 2 hours, which women's matches rarely get to. The women's circuit should be upped to best of 5 games. This has caused quite a stir in our form!

  • Women and men should be equal...

It is not fair that men are awarded more money than women because they only play less sets because they have different abilities to men, however, them having less views is the medias doing, so that should not affect their award money. Also, it is sexist that men get awarded more money, which means that both sexes are not equal when they should be, because women tennis players are just as good as men.

  • Women play shorter matches.

We think that women should not get the same prize money, as they are playing shorter matches. If they were willing to play the same amount of sets then they should get equal money. The pay should be proportional to the number of sets played, which is why men should earn more.

  • If you do less you get paid less!

Women's tennis players don't have as many viewers as men's tennis so instead of it being a case of gender inequality it is simply a matter of the fact that women's tennis players don't make as much income to warrant such a big prize. The women's players also don't play as many sets and if you do less at work you would be paid less- so it is only fair!

  • N10 think that equal pay is a flawed logic.

The obvious starting point is to notice there are less sets in the women's game. Tennis is an entertainment sport, and if they are provided less entertainment, surely they should be paid less?

Also, a number of us are concerned by the fact that it is often necessary to press the mute button when watching tennis on TV. We have little sympathy for the argument in favour of equal pay given the ridiculous screaming and bellowing that many female players make when hitting the ball.

  • Women don't play as long

The officials have decided that a best of 3 match is a more appropriate length (just like the girls here run 300m rather than 400m on sports day?). It is accepted by all that the women work as hard as the men but they don't play for as long. Prize money comes from sponsorship, sponsors are interested in the big audiences. Theoretically, the men should be paid 3 times as much if we go on viewing figures. N6 was split but voted "no" in the end.

  • No - different pay for different play

Women do not play for as long as the men. Because women play fewer sets, they do not deserve the same prize money. Smaller number of women's tennis supporters means it does not have the same money in it. As a result, they should not be given the same prize. If they played the same sets, it should be equal but currently, it's not fair.

  • No they shouldn't be paid the same now.

If they played the same amount of sets and had the same viewing rates then yes they should be paid the same amount. The women have not chosen the rules and the amount of sets they play. If the sporting world is not happy with the amount they are paid then they should change the rules instead of punishing the women players. If you used the viewing numbers to decide how much they are paid then they will get less.

  • It depends :)

Women do not play the same amount of sets as men, even if they would chose to, scientifically, they are not as strong as men to compete in 3 sets. This isn't the women's fault, but the men deserve a little more pay as it is more challenging. If women were able to compete in 5 sets, then we think that women deserve equal pay. We would love to see Murray V. Serena Williams to see whether she can challenge this stereotype and bring in lots of viewers.
    V9 :)

  • The amount of tennis matters.

M9 believe that women don't create as much income to tennis, nor do they have to work as hard - they play less sets. Therefore, they should be paid less than the male players. If they had the opportunity to play the same amount of sets as the men, then they should be paid the same, but they don't and therefore their pay should reflect this.
