We are certainly not making the most of Earth's natural resources. Oh yes, we have made massive industries of mining, logging and nuclear power over the generations, mostly to the vast detriment of the very fabric of the planet, but we haven't made nearly enough effort to use those completely renewable sources of the things we need. The sad thing is that often people don't know what is best for themselves and the planet and will fight against using the wind, the sun and the power of the sea to their advantage.
The world needs to do everything in there power to use natural resources to their fullest capabilities before it's too late. Oil supplies and other natural resources are diminishing at a fast rate and needs to be stopped. If we don't try to use natural resources then our fossil fuel supply will run out very soon.
If this is, in fact, true, then it represents the weird and niche ways that natural resources are currently being used. If it is false, as I suspect, then it represents the ways that people are generally uneducated about the potential and current uses of natural resources. Either way, public support and institutional policies should be changed to enhance and increase the use of our renewable natural resources.
We are not using natural resources to their fullest capacity, but that is due in large part to the fact that it is not economical to do so. Unless, and until, natural resources can be used at a cheaper cost then other forms of energy production, natural resources will remain on the sidelines.
