  • Culture and tradition is hard to derail.

"Malawi" must have been around for many many years. Changing religious or cultural traditions is incredibly hard, and frowned upon. However, through education, we may help. We can educate them about the moral reality of this "ritual", or "cleansing", and let them know how it's just not right. This is also considering that those who practice Malawi culture live in poor territories.

  • yes and quickly

That is absolutely frightening that a young girl would be forced to have sex with a grown adult man at such a young age. It is so beyond appropriate and in turn a cruel practice. Those little girls are tiny at that age. I don't see how that doesn't damage them physically and psychologically. Education needs to be done quickly to get this barbaric act to stop.

  • Increased Western-style education eliminates many cultural deviations

Education, as we know it, is great for standardizing cultures and eliminating native rites and rituals. It eliminated most of the Native American culture by forcing individuals to live in new locations and not allowing them to speak their native tongue. We're quite good at getting rid of "immature" or "bad" cultural aspects. Trouble is, we tend to lose the good bits, too.

  • Yes, increased education can help.

Yes, increased education can help. If these girls knew more about sex and the dangers of having sex so early the communities of Malawi would not be so eager to participate in this strange ritual. Sex at such an early age, being a traditional, could definitely having some consequences for the sexual partners.
