  • People Won't be Tempted that Easily!

∽If we do raise the prices, people won’t give in that easily to the dollar of candy they want! Dr. Mitchell H. Katz and Dr. Rajiv Bhatia of the San Francisco Department of Public Health wrote that taxing is "an appropriate method of correcting for health and other social costs not accounted for in the private market cost." So instead of going for soft drinks, candy, cookies, etc., more people will spend their money on carrots, cucumbers, and celery! The doctors also concluded, “In the end, putting our money where our mouth is means aligning our economic incentives so that we always serve up the healthy choice.”∽

  • It is a great help to Americans

Most people which is everyone who can afford junk food is screwing themselves over...The higher the prices, the lower the health care costs...People basically have to pay their health care bills twice...Because they buy the junk food, then they get problems with their health and then they have to pay a high health care bill.

  • This is stupid

Let me just get things straight. Obama kicked out all junk food in schools just because some kids can't control their eating habits. That percentage is about 4% of kids in each school.Who cares . There will always be people who are fat I mean has he seen the movie wall-e

  • People eat too much of it.

Everyday , when I'm walking I see people eating chips or soft drinks. Since everyone can afford chips or soft drinks maybe there should be taxes. Everyone eats it for snacks or even for lunch. What we also should put taxes on are cigarettes because they cause people problems. That is why its important to put taxes on chips or soft drinks.

  • Junk food is a luxury

Junk food is simply an indulgence people can afford that has no nutritional value. There is nothing wrong with taxing a "luxury". We don't need junk food so raising the price will simply reestablish priorities for what one needs to get. Besides this the government has a big debt to pay.

  • Higher Taxes on Junk Food Lower Prices on Fresh Produce

Simple, if it isn't naturally grown, if its processed and packed with chemicals and sugars and fats then the taxes should be higher on it. Fresh fruits and veggies that are naturally grown, and healthy should come with a lower price tag. By doing this people will be drawn to buying fresh healthy produce, currently it's too expensive and that is why people tend to go buy the junk food and soft drinks cause sadly enough its cheaper, you don't have to cut it, clean it, cook it or what ever! You simply open the bag, crack open the can and let the fat into your body! Where as if it were the fresh produce was cheaper it would allow people on low income living paycheck to paycheck to be able to afford amazing great food

  • Higher taxes should be put on junk foods and soft drinks.

Higher taxes should be put on junk foods and soft drinks because when unhealthy foods are more expensive to purchase, fewer people will buy them. When fewer people buy them, then those people stay healthier because they are not consuming the fats, carbohydrates, sugars, and grease that can cause bad health and obesity in people.

  • Duh! It's Simple

160,000 fast food restaurants in America and 50 million Americans are served daily. This shows that Americans are really obese. One way to solve this problem is to impose taxes on soft drinks and junk food. After knowing this you probably shouldn't go eat and drink and eat soft drinks and fast food daily. Maybe shorten the times you go to do that.

  • What right do you have to govern an Americans freedom of choice.

Our population is not dwindling because of unhealthy eating habits. Focus your greed for american money on the wealthiest people not the middle or lower class. How about increasing the tax of products that are exotic or above standards that wealthy people throw money away on like yatchs and fancy cars or homes, jewerly and especially items that exceed what a typical human needs. Taxes are not a solution to any problem only a means to steal hard earned money.

  • No more taxes

We are so over taxed. Stop the tax abuse. Educate people, and get off our butts turn off the tv and get out into the world. Life is worth living, we need to start to appreciate what we take for granted, our health. Paying ore taxes is not the way to go.

  • Another government tatic to get more of our money, how about making healthy food cheaper, sports programs cheaper, gym memberships cheaper, open community health programs.

Government robbery. Leave our money alone. Phoney taxes is getting ridiculous. Time for lowering taxes not raising. Help us afford good healthy choices. This is nuts, which are too expensive too. Put more money into community programs, fun activities on a regular basis for families to enjoy together. Skating, tobogganing, swim programs. There are better solutions than tax payers pockets.

  • Taxes should not be in soft drinks and junk food

No they should not be imposed on soft drinks and junk food. The government can't control what we eat. We had to make our own designs and choices. People will be poor if they higher the tax on junk food and soft drinks. So please don't higher taxes in junk food and soft drinks

  • Junk food is harmful, but we can't control what people eat

Junk food is harmful to our health. Americans are heavier than their counterparts in almost all similar countries. However we still have the freedom to make bad choices. Junk food is plentiful and cheap. Some people do not believe they can afford better quality healthier foods. Imposing taxes on junk food and soft drinks would affect the market and possibly lead to job loss.

  • No, taxes will likely not keep people from eating poorly.

It's difficult to know for sure whether or not taxes on soft drinks and junk food would slow down unhealthy eating choices. However, if we compare the problem and this supposed solution to things like cigarette taxes, alcohol taxes, and gasoline taxes, it seems that when people really want something, they'll be willing to pay whatever they have to, to get it. Cigarette taxes are the most likely parallel, and even though the rates are sky-high and taxed at both the state and federal level, people who smoke are still willing to buy them because they're addicted. So it's entirely possible only the government would benefit from a tax on junk food items.
