Transgender inmate found dead in cell while in protective custody: Should this death be investigated as a hate crime?

  • Murdered while in protective custody?

Obviously a guard had a hand in this and more than likely the guard was an ignorant, hatefilled bigot. Many of our most hateful, biggotted and revolting individuals are in law enforcement. That unfortunately is as plain as day. Black men are very often the victims but transgender bring out their hate as well. I hope the pig is caught and punished.

  • Hate crime always a possability when a transgender individual dies

Yes, the death of a transgender inmate should be investigated, at least in part, as a hate crime. There are probably several possible causes of death, however, there is enough hatred and mistrust of transgender individuals to cause alarm in a death like this one. Also, the fact that the individual was in protective custody causes questions.

  • Yes, death of Transgender prison inmate in protective custody seems suspicious.

Yes, the death of Transgender inmate found dead while in protective custody should be investigated as a hate crime. It is my belief that any deaths that occur in prison should be investigated to determine the cause. Furthermore, inmates in protective custody typically have little, if any, contact with other inmates. Therefore, if the the inmate did not die from natural causes, and foul play is thought to be involved, I think it is necessary to factor the fact that the inmate was Transgender and as a result, more susceptible to being a victim of a hate crime, especially in a prison setting.

  • Yes, the death is very suspicious.

The death of transgender inmate while in protective custody should be investigated as hate crime. It is very clear that transgender have over the years suffered in the hands of inmates merely because of their status. Transgender are humans beings just us, tolerance and acceptance should be embraced and above all love to all mankind.

  • No one's death is more important than another's

It is not right to place the hate crime label on any death unless they are all going to get the label. No one should be a protected group above anyone else. Although I am sad a human life was taken, his death is not more worthy of punishment than the death of a straight man or a white woman or Catholic person. Everyone's life counts.

  • No, that would be premature

If all we know is the inmate was murdered, it's not a hate crime (yet). In order to qualify as a hate crime it would have to be proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the crime occurred because the victim was transgender. To investigate as a hate crime simply because the victim was transgender would be as misguided as saying the killing of a black person in prison should be investigated as a hate crime because it may have been due to racial bias. True, it may have been, but it needs to be proved.

Jumping the to the conclusion that it was a hate crime would actually impede the investigation. Perhaps the crime had nothing to do with transgender status, and by focusing on it the investigators miss the real killer.

  • Murder is Murder, Period

Murder is murder, regardless of who is murdered. The fact that the person who is murdered is, for example, allegedly a transgender person does not mean that the murder in question is "more murdery" than a regular murder.

Equality under U.S. law means just that: No special treatment for anyone, under any circumstances.
