Turkey EU membership: Is Turkey's alleged genocide of Armenians irrelevant?

  • Turkey, you mean the Ottoman Empire.

The modern government of Turkey doesn't have to admit to an over 100 year old genocide they didn't even do. The area was under absolute monarchical control from people who are now dead and cannot be punished. I don't expect the leader of Germany to admit to the holocaust every time they are chosen.

  • If Turkey is a truly a free and democratic nation, it would have recognized the Armenian Genocide by now.

By refusing to acknowledge the historical truth, the Turkish government demonstrates a continuity between the perpetrators of Genocide and the current Turkish society. Or if that is not the case, then Turkey demonstrates an immaturity and deficit in democratic public discourse and self-reflection. Turkish society still attacks and pours scorn on it's most famous public intellectuals like Nobel laureate Pamuk, newspaper editor Dink, novelist Safak amongst others. Until Turkey stops deluding itself and faces the destruction of the Armenian communities, it has no place in a progressive democratic EU.

  • No, it isn't.

If there is a genocide going on anywhere people should be made aware of it so it could be put to a stop. It is a terrible thing to happen to any society and we should be taught about these things so others know what it is and can help contribute to stopping it for good.

  • Genocide is Relevant

When seeking to join acceptance into any group, any prospective member's history is relevant to the group's decision whether to admit the applicant. This is particularly true where, here, the EU is supposed to represent political, social and economic goals of its members. So, the mass murder of people based solely on their ethnic background is an entirely relevant consideration to determine membership.
