Offshore drilling can temporarily help avert an energy crisis. However, in the long run, it will do little. There is not enough oil available from offshore drilling sights to fuel the United States forever, and the damage to the ecosystem isn't worth the risk. Instead, more funding should be put into the development of alternative energy sources. In particular, it would be helpful to work on battery storing technologies.
Oil is a limited resource. We are pumping it out of the earth at a tremendous rate and it takes millions of years to replace. We are using up the oil faster than it can be created. It is the poster child for nonrenewable resource. No amount of offshore drilling can stop the inevitable. Sorry.
