We've seen what happens when offshore oil drilling goes bad. Is it an outlet for more oil? Sure it is, one that when targeted wisely could be quite substantial. At the end of the day I'm not sure it's worth it, one more mistake and we're starting to really ask more of marine life than we realistically should, it can only take so many spills.
I believe it will. If what I have heard is true about the amount of oil that is in the Gulf of Mexico then it should be more than enough to contribute overall. I believe that with offshore drilling and also drilling in Alaska that the USA could become greatly independent of foreign oil.
