Yes, other car companies should be pressured to do the same because we need to fight climate change any way possible. Cars do not need gas to drive anymore. There is so much technology that is pushing us away from fossil fuels. We must focus on other forms of energy.
Imagine how quickly they could have dominated the electric market if they had invested the tens of billions they're going to pay out in fines and settlements. Going low and zero emission is the right choice for VW. How else can they make it up to 400 million urban Europeans whose health they have been hurting with diesel smog for at least 6 years? VW should also drop diesels and start lobbying against diesel technology. VW can survive and regain its reputation but it is going to take an amazing 180. VW should take on the role of finally leading the world out of the fossil fuel age..
I think it's great that Volkswagen is taking this step. I know that it is hard, for both companies and private citizens, to veer away from our traditional ways of doing things. But, we need to focus on a cleaner environment so that we can stay around to enjoy life on Earth. These types of things aren't always the most convenient, but with time and advances in technology, they can get better and become the norm.
Nobody should be pressured into doing anything no matter who or what they are. Volkswagen made a choice that they felt was right but that does not necessarily mean that it is a right decision for every other car company. If they decide to stop selling diesel vehicles then that's cool but it should be their decision.
