  • In the Middle.

There is no right answer to this, this sort of subject needs to be faced lightly. Many people may say it was better, there was no technology to separate humanity, no ways of over thinking and empowering others, no cyber bullying etc. But in other cases some people may say no, because of the disease the lack of sanitation and services, the way in which they didn't have the technology to discover all of this life threatening diseases that killed thousands. I don't think it matters whether it was better or not, it isn't up to us to decide, it is only up to the person lively at that time, in their own personal state, just the same as us. Only we can decide whether we live a good life and only we can decide that by the time we grow old whether we enjoyed living in this moment in time.

  • It is a mind trick

When you say "the good old days" your brain is thinking of the highlights of that era. If you think of 80s for example, you think Michael Jackson, Guns n' Roses because those were your favorite parts. One day someone will look at these days as "the good old days" they will SOMEHOW find something great about these days and complain that they don't have them. "Ohh 'trap queen' is SOO classic"

  • No, and here is why.

Every aspect of the modern times is better than when it once was. Our medicine is incomparably better, our understanding of the universe and it's laws is far more advanced, our technology in the fields of communication and entertainment are way more advanced, our capability to listen to and produce music has also improved vastly. Social and Political advancements have led to greater equality for all(Though, we still have a long way to go) and people are becoming more intelligent(though, there are still idiots everywhere. Like herpes, it seems as if though one can never lose them for good).

  • No part of history is better than the other

There were good things about the past and there are good things about now. Likewise, there are also bad things about both. I see both times as having good and bad. The only thing about now that is a bit better is that we have technology and we have grillers, which have helped perfect, through science, the art of making steaks.

  • The "good old days" is a subjective construction.

Obviously for some people, the past is better in some way than today. Nevertheless, it does not mean that for all the human kind this is the rule.
In that sense, thinking about "the good old days" is only possible if you take someone's particular present and their particular past.

This is based on opinion of subjectivity not experience by objectivity. Only persons over 50 can answer this since they lived and experienced that era. Your B&W photo neither makes it clear what "good old days" era you are referring too. The 70s were an era, the 50s & 60s were connected as an era; so were the 30s & 40s a separate era of "good old days". The turn of the 20th Century was an era, so were the late 1800s. Recorded written, photographed, and film/digital recorded history can never be logically ascribed as an "illusion" unless the mediums of record keeping are from one primary source (i.E. Moon landings, Roswell, etc.). So illusion is misapplied here here too.
