Edward Snowden was correct when he said a "turnkey dictatorship" was being put in place. Every single civil liberty has been weakened under the Obama Administration, including an executive order that essentially allows people, their property and assets to be confiscated for used by the government under conditions of national emergency.
During his State of the Union Address, President Obama should have taken the firm stance and struck down the NSA's surveillance programs. His speech was lacking in the area of national security, especially since he didn't disavow these tactics. The NSA has broken the trust of the American people after all.
No, Obama's State of the Union address was not a national security disappointment, because nobody is surprised that Obama is weak on national security. Obama has spent the last five years reducing American weapons capabilities while allowing other nations to build up their arms. He has apologized to Muslims while ruining our special friendship with Israel.
Obama's State of the Union address wasn't a national security disappointment because national security isn't a priority right now. The war on terror is over because Osama bin Laden is dead. The Iraq War is over and troops are coming home from Afghanistan. We don't need to focus on national security right now and instead should be the economy and jobs.
If anything, there has been far too much emphasis on national security over the past decade - since 9/11. The President has taken solid steps to, if not decrease the reach of the national security complex,k at least avoid expanding it, and he has not been heavy handed - from a cost and involvement perspective - in national security matters.
I have actually enjoyed the SOTU address for the past few years, but this year I found it lacking. Watching Biden and Boehner in the background was far more entertaining. Obama just dredged up past ideas and showed some real life examples of effect of policy. He didn't say anything truly moving, or have any strong change ideas.
Every president is going to be criticized but President Obama's State of the Union address should not be one of these issues. He addressed many of the important national security issues directly. Some of these are discussing world nuclear threats, issues in Afghanistan, and Iran and North Korea's nuclear programs and tests.

President Obama's State of the Union address emphasized his commitment to reducing the nuclear threat. Including reduction of nuclear arms and the concerns over North Korea's and Iran's nuclear programs. He also addresses the draw down of troops in Afghanistan. I don't think the State of the Union should include step by step details on how everything will be done. It is not the time or place for that excessive detail, which is what I have read in several news reports that are criticizing the speech. I feel congress as a whole are more responsible for lack of action and planning than the President. No matter what is said or done there will always be those who want to argue and criticize without listening and seeing the whole picture.
He covered reducing world nuclear threats, drawing down the forces in Afghanistan, Iran's nuclear program, North Korea's nuclear tests, and much more. He even address sequestration, which will cause huge cuts in military spending as well as domestic "entitlement" programs and is something that he and his party want to avoid, but it needed to be talked about on a national stage.
President Obama gave a good address for all the points that were covered. The national security portion of the address was adequate. The focus needs to be on the economy and getting the country back to being competitive and having a positive trade balance. We have a big military and they take care of national security.
Obama's state of the union addressed national security directly, as did it many other issues close to his heart. Whether you like the guy or not the only way you can argue that it was a disappointing speech in any major area is if you went into the speech wanting to hate it.
