  • Without the Columbian Exchange we would be nothing

The Europeans brought foods such as almonds, coffee, cucumbers, bananas, garlic, lettuce, tea and many other things that were new to the indigenous people. On the other hand the indigenous people gave the explorers things such as maize, chili peppers, agave, gum, papaya, tomatoes and all kinds of foods that the explorers never seen before.

  • Without the Columbian Exchange, there wouldn't be a country for people to practice the ideas of John Locke and Adam Smith

John Locke and Adam Smiths ideas were originally written for Europe, but couldn't truly be pulled off in an already established government. People came to America for religious freedom, to start a better life, and eventually come away from Britain and declare independence. Yes, there was the exchange of disease and the Native Americans were treated horribly, and we didn't need to take all of their land, but the benefits are tremendous. Becuase of the start of the new country and in the beginning pf the exchange of goods, it allowed us to build a new country where ideas were not limited and anyone can go from the bottom to the top. Becuase of this our country has some of the best medicine and immigration rates because of the freedom. All fo that would not have been possible without the exchange of animals, plants, and ideas. Note: The Columbian exchange was not 100% perfect, but what is, in the end, we should be very thankful for the benefits it gives us today.

  • Yes the columbine change was good

In the Americas, Europeans found a variety of foods that were new to them, including tomatoes, pumpkins, peppers. They eagerly transported these to Europe. Two of these new foods, corn and potatoes, became important foods in the Old World. Easy to grow and store, potatoes helped feed Europe’s rapidly growing population. Corn spread all across Europe and to Africa and Asia, becoming one of the world’s most important cereal crops.

Europeans also carried a wide variety of plants and animals to the Americas, including wheat and grapes from Europe and bananas and sugarcane from Africa and Asia. Cattle, pigs, goats, and chickens, unknown before the European encounter, joined the Native American diet. Horses and donkeys transported people and goods quickly. Horse also provided the nomadic peoples of western North America with a new more effective way to hunt buffalo.

The transfer of food crops from continent to continent took time. By the 1700s, however, corn, potatoes, manioc, beans, and tomatoes were contributing to population growth around the world.
Before Columbus, the Americas had plenty of domesticated plants. By the time Columbus had arrived, dozens of plants were in regular use, the most important of which were maize (corn), potatoes, cassava, and various beans and squashes. Lesser crops included sweet potato, papaya, pineapple, tomato, avocado, guava, peanuts, chili peppers, and cacao, the raw form of cocoa. Within 20 years of Columbus’ last voyage, maize had established itself in North Africa and perhaps in Spain. It spread to Egypt, where it became a staple in the Nile Delta, and from there to the Ottoman Empire, especially the Balkans. [...] Maize appeared in China in the 16th century and eventually supplied about one-tenth of the grain supply there.

    [...]

In West Africa, peanuts and cassava provided new foodstuffs. Cassava, a tropical shrub native to Brazil, has starchy roots that will grow in almost any soil. In the leached soils of West and Central Africa, cassava became an indispensable crop. Today some 200 million Africans rely on it as their main source of nutrition. Cacao and rubber, two other South American crops, became important export items in West Africa in the 20th century. The sweet potato, which was introduced into China in the 1560s, became China’s third most important crop after rice and wheat. It proved a useful supplement to diets throughout the monsoon lands of Asia. Indeed, almost everywhere in the world, one or another American food crops caught on, complementing existing crops or, more rarely, replacing them.

  • The bigger picture

We would not have the means of doing this debate if it hadn't happened. It may have been a mass death, but it was not genocide because it was not deliberate killing until later. And unfortunately, most of the crops in Europe at the time were incapable of surviving in the increasingly poor soil conditions, and all of the old world had been experiencing almost routine food shortages for years. The formerly nomadic lifestyle of native americans ended as well, when the introduction of metal tools like the plow and animals like horses and cattle allowed less people to do more work, letting them stay in a single place.

  • The Colombian Exchange was in no way beneficial for both the old and the new world.

The Colombian exchange was in no way beneficial for both the old and the new world as the old world gained land, slaves, produce and animals. The Americas received diseases and slavery from the exchange. The new world’s culture and traditions were stripped away as most of the indigenous were thrown into slavery. And although Columbus was not credited for the discovery the old world gained more from the exchange and was an even richer culture. The Europeans almost wiped out the Native Americans due to all the diseases and slavery that they brought with them. The old world forced the indigenous to farm the new world and produce vegetation for them and build the houses for the new civilisation forming there. This was a devastating time for the Natives as the majority of their population was wiped out.

  • It was horrible.

I do not believe that the Columbian Exchange’s benefits outweighed its consequences due to the fact that it did had brought an end to many beneficial things that we have had before, I believe that things were meant to stay the way they were in order to preserve the natural state of life
