Which is better: federalist states (yes) or unitary governments (no)?

  • American Federalism Seems to Work Just Fine

Unitary governments don't allow for opposition parties. Just look at many of the Middle Eastern countries such as Egypt, Iraq under Saddam Hussein, and Iran. American federalism strikes a balance between states' rights and federal powers. That way, no one person or party gains absolute power like in unitary governments.

  • Yes and no.

I think it depends on the country when it comes to which is better between federalists states and a unitary government. I think in the US the federalists states work because that is how our country works to remain united as one government. Other countries may work differently though and that should be considered.

  • Definitely for Larger Countries

Unitary governments might work fine for smaller countries like Italy and Portugal, but I believe that for larger countries like Canada, USA, and Russia to do well, it's best to even the work load and let the individual states or provinces address the issues relevant to their districts. This eases the burden on the Capitol and the pressing domestic issues that the president won't be bothered to address in some far-flung area of the country would be taken care of more efficiently by the governor. It's also important to note that every state has its own distinct identity and culture and would not appreciate a one-size-fits-all regime telling every state to be exactly the same. I know my home state California wants nothing to do with Texas or Alabama for example. A federation works to keep all of these distinct cultural regions working together for a united American cause.

  • Definitely For Larger Countries

For large countries like the USA, Canada, or Russia, I believe it's better to even the workload and let the individual states or provinces take care of the tasks relevant to their immediate area, so that we can displace the burden away from the Capitol. Unitary states might work fine for smaller countries like Italy and Portugal, but the federation we have here in the United States works better for taking care of pressing domestic issues that the president wouldn't be bothered to see fixed in some far-flung area of the country. It also helps that every region will have its own identity and culture, and will govern based off that. Obviously my state California would want nothing to do with Texas or Alabama for example. So a federation works better for keeping us working together for a united cause, rather than breeding tension under a one-size-fits-all regime.

  • It depends on the state, but federalism is usually preferable.

What government is best suited for a country depends tremendously on the country in question. For most countries, and certainly all larger countries, federalism is preferable. This is because regions within a state often vary tremendously in population, culture, values, geography etc. Take Massachusetts and Alaska in the United States as an example, these two states have tremendous differences and it would be illogical that both would have the exact same policies imposed on them from a central government. It is better to give separate regions some autonomy. In addition, a strong unitary government will almost always be dominated by wealthier and more populace regions thus leading to policies effectively being dictated upon weaker regions.

  • Federalist in the real world

Unitary governments are good in theory but for such a large area of people it is best to have states. If the population is real small you can stay unitary. Once it gets to a certain size you are best with states because it gives smaller governments a chance to rule over parts.

  • Unitary would be more streamlined.

When I think about the American system of government, which is: City, followed by county, followed by state, followed by federal, all I can think of wow do we waste of a lot of money on bureaucracy. In a country such as ours where all Americans should have the same rights and assurances, we really dropped the ball by not having a unitary government.

  • Unitary is the best

I say Unitary is the best for small countries like Africa, South America, Canada, Russia, and ect. Federalism is terrbile for big counntries like, Italy, Monaco, Belgium, Liechtenstein, and ect. I also want to say that you should stop harping on us short people. Back off!!! SO, basically don't listen to anything I just said. Bye!

  • Unitary Government is the best

Unitary law is centralize while federalism can't be centralize the law. It is important to centralized the law for the unity of each state. Unitary state can be officially manage the law and the unity of its country to prevent creating high weaponry that can be cause war. Thank you!

  • Unitary government is the best

Unitary government is not as much democratic form of government due to decision making power at central place while federal government is a pure democratic government in which local governments, territories, constituents states or provinces can enjoys some powers regarding governing and decision making in their respective regions.
Unitary government have just one government that’s why it is also known by the name of central government while in federal government there are two governments, one at central position and other at state or province level.
Unitary government may or may not have constitution. Like England has no constitution while France has constitution and both are unitary government. While federal government must have a constitution.

  • Smaller government, Fairer laws, Simpler system.

Would cost less to run as less legislation and institutions so easier to understand and politicians to deal with so costs less also allows government to take powers away from states if abused preventing state corruption also states can pass their own laws in unitary but only if central government has approved that power and can over right them all. Plus everyone should have same rights and be equal across the country.
