Will anything happen if the U.S. goes over the 'fiscal cliff'?

  • Yes, but what?

Yes, it is clear that there will be some kind of consequences if the United States does happen to go over the "fiscal cliff." But the question is, what are those consequences? We have to be careful to work from accurate information and to not fall victim to sensationalism again.

  • Of course it will

If there's anything both sides of the aisle can agree upon it's this, nobody has presented this issue as an irrelevant one. If we go over, that's bad, and taxes will go up for you whether you're too rich to care or barely making it week to week. This is a problem and it is one that is getting mighty close to being reality.

  • Yes, going over the fiscal cliff would make a difference in everyday lives

If nothing is done to avoid the fiscal cliff or the USA goes over the cliff and then delays action to correct it, everyday American citizens will suffer from a dramatic increase to Income and Social Security taxes. These increases would essentially crush the healing economy of the United States. Hopefully, the threat of ruining the ability of voters to survive under the weight of these taxes will encourage Republicans and Democrats to work together toward a solution.

  • Nope, things won't change

From what I can tell, this "fiscal cliff" is another freak out for people. What will happen if we fall off, so to speak? Maybe taxes will rise. Or maybe everyone will be so upset that Congress will stop that. Maybe food prices will go up. Maybe they won't. Basically, it's a whole bunch of maybes that probably won't happen. Or they will. And we will go on. I hate that people get so damn worked up about things that if we just calmly dealt with them we wouldn't have issues to begin with. Stop letting your emotions rule everything!
