Would Star Trek style transportation kill you and create a perfect walking talking copy on the other side?

Asked by: Kirknerk
  • If its a copy yes.

You would die and then a copy would be made that is perfect, so you would not feel like you had died. However, in reality you would have been annihilated and then reassembled so yes a death has occurred but it would be irrelevant as you are a perfect copy according to the question. Really great question.

  • You would die and be copied.

The transporter would destroy you at the molecular level. Your consciousness would not be transported along with your body. Your mind is unique. Reconstruction of your molecules would produce an identical consciousness in which you do not reside but a copy of you would. It somewhat depends on where you come down on the mind-body problem.
