Mobile Phone Confirmation?

(Voting Period) This is more of a question than a debate. Why does the site make you give your phone number to access certain features? Which features are they?

I am against the mobile phone confirmation.

Same-sex unions should not be federally recognized as marriage.

(Post Voting Period) My observations...
1. Aff has the burden of proof
2. Aff must prove that federally-recognized same-sex marriages ought never be allowed

My arguments...
1. Homosexuality is natural and homosexuals, being humans, deserve equality
2. In a truly free society all individuals must be equal
3. For true equality everyone must be treated in the same manner and granted the same rights
4. Same-sex marriage is a right necessitated by any free society

Thank you, I look forward to friendly debate.

All things considered, the Patriots were better than the Giants in the 2007-08 season.

(Voting Period) You asked for it, you got it. Prepare to meet the awsome fist of my wrath.

First I'd like to ask that the voters based on the arguments presented, and put one's personal opinion aside. Thank you for judging this debate.

I define 'better' as- of superior excellence or quality.

I will prove this through a few reasons.

Contention I: Season Record.

The Pats went, what, 16-0 IN THE REGULAR SEASON?!?! The Giants were only 10-6 in the regular season and 14-6 overall, while the Pats were 18-1. Clearly, the Pats were the better team. They faced harder teams, won more games, and even beat the Giants in the last game of the regular season.

Contention II: Records.

The pats recieved multiple awards in this year. They had Moss break the recieving TD record, Brady get the most passing TDs, collectivley scored the most points and points/game, and were the first team to have a perfect regular season. This clearly shows the Pats' pwn'ge overall against the G

(Tourney #22) Cats are the greatest animal known to man.

(Voting Period) I'd like to thank Logical-Master for accepting this debate and our judge… for judging.

Anyway, I affirm the resolution, "Cats are the greatest animal known to man."

First, I'd like to define some key terms that will be important in this round.

•A ‘cat' does not simply mean a domestic cat, but any animal in the felidae (feline) family.
•I'd like to define animal as any organism in the kingdom animala besides homo sapiens.

With that out of the way, I will move onto my points as to why cats are the greatest animal known to man.

1.Cats are independent and can take care of themselves. Cats can groom themselves, hunt for themselves, and even open doors and windows. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_intelligence#Opening_doors_and_windows)

2.Cats are very smart. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_intelligence) Cats can communicate with one another, learn tricks, reach hard to reach things, use the toilet, and can even predict death (http://www.dailyma

Topic #34 - The US should adopt a timetable for Withdrawl from Iraq

(Voting Period) As Pro, I will be defending that the United States should adopt a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq. Thus, the Polar opposite stance that my opponent will have to prove is that the united States should not adopt a timetable for withdrawlf from Iraq. To be judged by James Fong, Maximilian Powers, and Dan Alexander.
Definitions:
Timetable - A schedule listing the times at which certain events are expected to take place
Withdrawal - retreat or retirement of an army or other military force from an area in which it was fighting

In Laymans terms, The US needs to set up a time limit to get our troops out of Iraq

This war has cost America. Not only finacially[ http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11880954/ ] but with lives as well [http://www.npr.org/news/specials/tollofwar/tollofwarmain.html?ps=bb2].

(Voting Period) Good day, ladies and gentlemen.

In today's case, I will prove the resolution, The United States should adopt a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq, true behind any reasonable doubt. The judges for this debate are Luke Cumbee, Dorian Walker, and Matt McGirr.

This debate may be forfeited by myself, as I leave for camp on the day that PFG gets back from vacation, Sunday.

Let's start off this debate with key definitions, all from dictionary.com:

SHOULD- must; ought to

ADOPT- to choose or take as one's own; make one's own by selection or assent (In this case, to use a timetable by the United States)

TIMETABLE- any schedule or plan designating the times at or within which certain things occur or are scheduled to occur

WITHDRAWL- (Noun form of WITHDRAW-) to draw back, away, or aside; take back; remove (In simpler terms, it means to remove U.S. troops from Iraq.)

I will now move onto my contentions and show you why the United States should ad

Under normal conditions, an average person CAN eat just one Lay's potato chip.

(Voting Period) I stand in affirmation of the topic, "An average person CAN eat just one Lay's potato chip."

For those of you who don't know, this is the slogan for Lay's: "Betcha can't eat just one!"

Great, huh? Unfourtunatly, this company is lying to you.

Here are some definitions for the round (dictionary.com):

Can: to be able to; have the ability, power, or skill to

Average: typical; common; ordinary

First off, there are no chemicals in Lay's that make it hard to eat just one. Potatoes, nor salt, are phyiscal addicting. Therefore, there is nothing in the potato chip that makes your body addicted to the chips nor even compels you to eat more.

Secondly, a person could easily take a chip, eat it, and move on with their day. People have too much to be worried about to be eating potato chips. Also, most people are concered with their health, so they would only eat one to get the taste and not the calories.

Finally, there are other things they can be

Resolved: shoe companies should make more Velcro shoes and less shoe-lace shoes.

(Voting Period) I'd like to thank you for looking at this debate and hopefully voting, judging, or debating it. I ask that voters based on who made the better arguments, and that you put your personal opinion aside.

With that said, let's explore the reasons why Velcro is better than shoe-laces.

CONTENTION 1: Ease.

It is extremely easy to tighten and pull over a peice of Velcro to the other side of your shoe. On the other hand, it takes years for a child to learn how to tie shoelaces. And all those methods! I mean you got your bunny ears, your loop-swoop-pull, and numerous other methods. Not to mention you have to learn about other kinds of knots too. It is much simpler just to use Velcro.

CONTENTION 2: Annoyingness/Wear-and-tear/ugliness.

First off, shoe laces untie so eaisly, it can get annoying. And what do you do? You keep having to re-tie 'em! It is simply annoying. What about Back to the Future, where Marty gets those cool VELCRO automatic shoes? Velcro st

Resolved: That Global Warming is a manmade problem.

(Voting Period) Note to Voters: Take not your own beliefs when voting, vote based on merit of the arguments. Also this is copy-pasted from another debate I was in: http://www.debate.org/debates/Resolved-That-Global-Warming-is-a-manmade-problem./1/
From my opponent-to-be's comments in that debate, he looks to be good competition. I hope for a good debate, and I thank him in advance.

Okay, to set the parameters of this debate, my opponent must prove with a preponderance of evidence that men did indeed cause global warming. I must cast a serious doubt that CO2 and other so-called greenhouse gases created by industry cause global warming. Also, this is not about the existence of climate change, the earth is warming, the question is why.

Contention 1: CO2 is not correlated to temperature change.
As shown in graphs by realclimate.org at the end of the last ice age there was a 1000 lag in CO2 and CH4 levels as the heat increased. Other evidence from the EPA shows that in preh

Does our education system breed hatred and separation amongst our youngsters?

(Voting Period) Firstly I would like to say that this is my first and most likely last debate on this website. If I fail then I fail myself as I was a victim of Bullying during my years in education.

My question to the leaders would be, do you like knowing that you can create certain groups of people in life by what you teach them in the education system, along with dictating fashions within the schools and knowing what's hot and what's not for the youngsters?

Is that how you progress your one world movement, by making us rubbish at integration from a young age and then chuck it at us later on in adult life? Its like your speaking down to the children saying, "don't like that person because..." and then to the adults who still think like that "you got to grow up and get used to it, it's integration you know"...

To me it doesn't work. The school education system has failed everyone of us in the modern world order of things. I bet in the past the ancients knew of how t

(Voting Period) The PlayPump solves for all major public health problems in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The PlayPump system solves for water related disease. The system prevents women from having to walk great distances (womens' health) to get the water. Meaning that there is no reason for them to be traveling to the areas where the mosquitoes are, thus eliminating the risk of contracting Malaria. Another is that the water will be clean, meaning diarrhea from dirty water will be a thing of the past. Many other diseases are solved for in similar ways to those above.

Also, it allows for more food to be grown. Through the PlayPumps women will have more free time. This will allow them to become involved in the agricultural work. By having more people to work, more work will get done. The more work that gets done, the more food there is.

PlayPumps give clean water to victims of HIV/AIDS, allowing them to take their much needed medications with clean water. This helps their alread

Resolved: Debate.org should feature a catagory of debate called 'debate.org'

(Voting Period) To make this perfectly clear, the catagories I am talking about are under the 'debate' tab at the top of your screen. The catagories currently are:
All
Arts
Business
Education
Entertainment
Health
News
Politics
Regional
Science
Sports
Technology

There are few reasons why this should be added.

1. There are numerous amounts of debates on this site, about this site, but there is no clear place to put these debates. It would be clear where to put it, and would not create any confusion.

2. The debate.org webmaster, as well as ordinary members, could go to this catagory and see how the website could be improved. Many debates, as I assume, are wiped off the opening screen in a day or two, and the moderators of this site do not get to see it. Especially with the new website launching, it would be very helpful in deciding what should be improved.

3. This could get the word out about things that people would normally not see. Debates like the info

(Voting Period) I believe AVGN is better than the Irate Gamer. I define 'better' as- 'of superior quality.' I will seek to explain why AVGN is better than Irate by looking at a few areas of analysis.

1. Irate is not better because he simply copies the AVGN. The Irate Gamer joined Youtube 8 months after AVGN, and built his channel and videos exactly like the AVGN. They review several of the same games, each one of which AVGN reviewed first. Irate even goes as far as to copy exact dialogue from AVGN in 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' and 'Back to the Future.'

2. Angry Video Game Nerd is much more funny than Irate. His rants are funnier, he has more clever dialogue, and he uses clever settings to add to the comedy. Not really much to explain here, if you just watch both reviewers, you can clearly see that AVGN is much more funny than Irate.

3. AVGN fits his character better. Rants should be about BAD games, but Irate reviews good games like Contra and Tetris. A lot of Ira

curb your enthusiasm is better than Seinfeld

(Voting Period) I believe curb your enthusiasm is the greatest show in the history of television, but that is not the topic of this debate. Instead, I'm arguing that it is better than Larry David's other show, Seinfeld. This is a two-round debate.

Here are the reasons curb your enthusiasm is superior to its more-popular cousin:

1. Larry David is awesome and Jerry Seinfeld is annoying and lame: Larry David was the brains behind the Seinfeld show. The character of "Jerry" is actually a composite of the real-life Larry and the real-life Jerry. For example, the real-life Kramer was Larry's neighbor, not Jerry's. Many of the incidents that happened to Jerry on the show actually happened to Larry in real life, not Jerry. And finally, George Cstanza is much funnier than the Jerry character, and George is based entirely on Larry David.

2. curb your enthusiasm's HBO format allows more explicit hilarity: Usually, cursing is a short cut to laughs that covers a lack of talent. Bu
