I think that it is scientifically plausible that Santa Claus exists. This of course includes all Santa Claus attributes such as delivering presents to everyone in one night and ya da ya da ya. My disclaimer on this however is that Santa Claus in my interpretation only delivers to those who believe in him. Definition: plausible - In this case meaning possible. Thus I present the challenge, someone show me that some part of Santa Claus is simply made up....... http://www.debate.org/debates/It-is-plausible-that-Santa-Claus-exists./1/comments/ 2008-12-20T11:52:24-08:00 Humpty Dumpty Was Pushed http://www.debate.org/debates/Humpty-Dumpty-Was-Pushed/1/ (Voting Period) As I was browsing through my list of previous debates, I found this one. I had quite a bit of fun debating it, and decided I'd revive it and see if anyone else thought it would be fun. As my opponent, you would be arguing FOR the resolution; that Humpty Dumpty WAS pushed, and didn't simply fall. I will leave the first round decision up to my opponent. They can simply accept, or they can create a case. I have no problem with either. To avoid semantics, Humpty Dumpty is the nursery rhyme character from the following rhyme Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall Humpty Dumpty had a great fall All the King's horses and all the King's men Couldn't put Humpty together again [1] With that, I, in advance, thank my opponent, and hope for a fun, engaging debate! :) --SOURCES-- [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humpty_Dumpty http://www.debate.org/debates/Humpty-Dumpty-Was-Pushed/1/comments/ 2009-06-09T14:06:20-08:00 .99999...(repeating) is equal to 1 http://www.debate.org/debates/.99999...-repeating-is-equal-to-1/1/ (Post Voting Period) Hi! I usually like debating serious political issues, but I though tit would be fun to debate this little thing I figured out because i have no life... .99999...=1 I'll prove it after someone accepts. People say were going into depression and things are going to turn out like the great depression well one way they could help is use alternative fuels you don't have to be that smart to figure this out! http://www.debate.org/debates/Our-Economy/1/comments/ 2008-12-11T14:55:03-08:00 Resolved: An ideal form of No Child Left Behind would be beneficial to the welfare of the U.S. http://www.debate.org/debates/Resolved-An-ideal-form-of-No-Child-Left-Behind-would-be-beneficial-to-the-welfare-of-the-U.S./1/ (Voting Period) I would like to wish my opponent good luck with this debate and with the tournament in general. I affirm: Resolved: An ideal form of No Child Left Behind would be beneficial to the welfare of the United States. Clarification: No Child Left Behind = NCLB OBSERVATION: ‘Ideal' defined and applied ---From: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ideal ---Ideal: "a conception of something in its perfection" -Therefore, within this resolution, all that I have to prove is that NCLB is beneficial for the United States under its perfect condition. To examine this, I will look to the intentions of NCLB, and when they are carried through successfully, it benefits the United States. CONTENTION 1: NCLB is not in its ideal form under the status quo. ---From: http://harvardcitizen.com/2008/02/13/nclb-a-good-idea-a-bad-policy/ --- "It's a great idea, but the supports necessary in order for schools to reach that performance level are not in place." -What thi http://www.debate.org/debates/Resolved-An-ideal-form-of-No-Child-Left-Behind-would-be-beneficial-to-the-welfare-of-the-U.S./1/comments/ 2009-03-29T12:20:47-08:00 Resolved: Affirmative action should be practiced in college admissions. http://www.debate.org/debates/Resolved-Affirmative-action-should-be-practiced-in-college-admissions./4/ (Post Voting Period) I affirm that I am CON for the resolution and will give my opponent the opening argument. http://www.debate.org/debates/Resolved-Affirmative-action-should-be-practiced-in-college-admissions./4/comments/ 2009-03-04T19:56:02-08:00 Education should be a privilege, not a right http://www.debate.org/debates/Education-should-be-a-privilege-not-a-right/1/ (Post Voting Period) Before I begin, I'd like to take a moment and thank my opponent, whoever he/she should be, and I wish you the best of luck. With that said, my position is pretty simple: I believe that the "free and public education" all Americans have a right to should become a privilege instead of a right. Article XII of the American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man (1948) states that: "Every person has the right to an education, which should be based on the principles of liberty, morality and human solidarity. Likewise every person has the right to an education that will prepare him to attain a decent life, to raise his standard of living, and to be a useful member of society. The right to an education includes the right to equality of opportunity in every case, in accordance with natural talents, merit and the desire to utilize the resources that the state or the community is in a position to provide. Every person has the right to receive, f http://www.debate.org/debates/Education-should-be-a-privilege-not-a-right/1/comments/ 2009-01-20T20:55:28-08:00 If a tree falls in the forest an no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? http://www.debate.org/debates/If-a-tree-falls-in-the-forest-an-no-one-is-around-to-hear-it-does-it-make-a-sound/1/ (Post Voting Period) Okay, let's get started. I will be making my arguments. 1) A tree falling in the forest without any one around doesn't produce a sound. It produces sound waves, without the presence of an ear, these sound waves cannot be turned into "sound". www.wikipedia.org/wiki/if_a_tree_falls_in_the_forest That is all for now. http://www.debate.org/debates/If-a-tree-falls-in-the-forest-an-no-one-is-around-to-hear-it-does-it-make-a-sound/1/comments/ 2009-06-10T18:58:25-08:00 It's nearly impossible to win a one round debate. http://www.debate.org/debates/Its-nearly-impossible-to-win-a-one-round-debate./1/ (Voting Period) No matter what I say in the first round, it opens up for one quick counter argument and no chances at rebuttal. There's the off chance that the opponent fails to read the topic appropriately but those are fairly rare. Largely the only person who would take such a debate is somebody who has thought of some clever way to counter the original argument. For example, this debate might be countered with various claims and accusations and I would be powerless to rebut those claims and thus lose. http://www.debate.org/debates/Its-nearly-impossible-to-win-a-one-round-debate./1/comments/ 2009-05-28T20:35:31-08:00 Giving Murderers the Death Sentence should be illegal http://www.debate.org/debates/Giving-Murderers-the-Death-Sentence-should-be-illegal/1/ (Voting Period) I think that the police giving murderers the death sentence should be illegal because by killing them, are the police really any better then the murderers. I think that it is really hypocritical because that's like saying "You killed a person/people, now we're gonna kill you." This would make the police murderers themselves. Murder - taking someone's life. I love golf and the Chiefs are awesome. Ok defining patriotism. This is my definition, but if you find an actual dictionary one, please feel free to use it. Patriotism - Pride in your country. So I believe pride in ones country should be taught in schools. As it is patriotism is already taught. Every morning the pledge of allegiance is recited. History classes are taught with emphasis on America and a lot of shady events in the past are hidden. So in status quo patriotism is taught. Almost every country has had some sort of revolt to overthrow the government. The United States has yet to have that. Yes the Civil War was that, but it was more about the south seceding than taking over. Nonetheless that was before schools taught patriotism. Back then schools were still highly undeveloped. Patriotism avoids governmental revolts which means less death and more stability. Those are good things. First, I must establish what is meant by the topic. *Schools: Grades K-12, which is Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade. *Same-Sex Classes: Classes of only girls, or only boys. ----Meaning, Schools should have classes consisting of only girls, or boys. **Also, I will be using the term, younger schools. By that I mean, sixth grade and under. By older schools, I mean seventh grade and older. ---------------NOTE--------------- Since I am negating this topic, I will let my opponent have the first argument. However, I would just like to state a few points to begin. I will come back in round two to attack my opponent's points and elaborate on my own, building a more stable argument. Next, I'd like to briefly touch on a few reasons why same-sex classes are bad. One, you have to learn how to interact with the opposite sex sometime in your life. You can't avoid it. If you attend a school with same-sex classes, w http://www.debate.org/debates/Schools-Should-Have-Same-Sex-Classes./1/comments/ 2009-02-28T17:59:45-08:00 Humpty Dumpty Was Pushed (this is a debate round of nonsense) http://www.debate.org/debates/Humpty-Dumpty-Was-Pushed-this-is-a-debate-round-of-nonsense/1/ (Voting Period) Ok well I did this topic during a SPAR debate and I really liked it. The nation's 9-year-olds posted their best reading and math scores in more than 30 years on the test, sometimes referred to as the nation's report card." Resolved: Affirmative action should be practiced in college admissions. ==== DEFINITIONS ==== D1: Affirmative action (heretoforth referred to as AA): action favouring those who tend to suffer from discrimination. [1] [1]Oxford Dictionary, http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/affirmativeaction?view=get ==== OBSERVATIONS ==== O1: To affirm the resolution, PRO need not show that AA should be practiced in ALL college admissions. If it should be practiced in any considerable group of college admissions, then the resolution is affirmed. O2: To affirm the resolution, PRO need not support a specific implementation of AA - PRO is free to choose to support any implementation that fulfills the resolution. O3: AA does not refer to any specific groups of people, it simply refers to people who tend to suffer from discrimination. If a person does not suffer from discrimination, AA cannot be given to that person. http://www.debate.org/debates/Resolved-Affirmative-action-should-be-practiced-in-college-admissions./8/comments/ 2009-03-15T17:51:55-08:00 Smoking Should be allowed During school http://www.debate.org/debates/Smoking-Should-be-allowed-During-school/1/ (Post Voting Period) In advance i would like to thank anyone who accepts this debate.
