Should schools spend money

(Post Voting Period) <div>Should schools spend money? Maybe. Schools are losing money day after day. Schools are becoming worse, day after day. What is are economy going to do. Schools should only spend money on things like, laptops, and Ipads, and maybe leap pads for K-2. Schools need these things because, well, these are semi educational. Laptops are good for typing things. The school I teach at has an e-mail account for every kid in the fifth grade. This way we can type up stories and share them to other students and teachers. The laptops are good for students to get an idea on the thing there learning. But still, the school I teach at keeps getting new playground equipment, and are slowly losing money. Still, kids may need these things like recess, or PE, or Art, but they don't need knew equipment EVERY year.</div>

Should single gender schools exist?

(Post Voting Period) My premise is that the cons of single gender school outweighs the pros.
I am against single gender schools for the following reasons:

1. Fun-

Without a doubt the majority of students would usually prefer a school with both genders if given the choice. The purpose of school is to help on a successful life in the future. A successful life means a few things, overall resulting in fun. Fun may be the purpose of everything, because that is of course what everybody wants. Single gender schools don't even get close to assuring a successful life, but let's say it did moreso than regular schools. You'd be cutting away a student's quality of life now for a slightly larger (not even true) chance of a fun life later on. There is one obvious question floating around right now: While it's true most students would prefer both genders, there are the odd ones not comfortable with that, so why take it away? If you look at single gender schools they are almost always big a

Public Schools should have uniforms

(Post Voting Period) First off there is no reason for there to be any school uniforms. Unless if you are in sports! Obviously, you wear them then.
But, if you look at it logically it doesn't make since to wear school uniforms like private schools do.
Yes, us public school could be better with school uniforms mainly of the fact of that there wouldn't be a school dress code we all have to abed by...
Just a uniform but the only reason we don't is because public schools are from the state and the private schools are not..
NOT SCHOOL OF THE PUBLIC KIND FOR UNIFORMS!!!!

merit pay based on student achievement should be a significant component for teacher compensation

(Voting Period) Contention 1: Merit pay does not work
Sub point 1: It does not improve education
a.	Merit pay does nothing to improve student performance A study by the Urban Institute found some positive short-lived effects of merit pay, but concluded that most merit pay plans "did not succeed at implementing lasting, effective ... plans that had a demonstrated ability to improve student learning. ...little evidence from other research...that incentive programs (particularly pay-for-performance) had led to improved teacher performance and student achievements."

b.	"The idea of merit pay, sometimes called pay for performance, was born in England around 1710. Teachers' salaries were based on their students' test scores on examinations in reading, writing, and arithmetic. The result was that teachers and administrators became obsessed with financial rewards and punishments, and curriculums were narrowed to include only the testable basics. ... So drawing, science, and mus

Merit pay based on student achievement is necessary.

(Voting Period) Before we begin I would like to define the terms merit pay and student achievement. Merit pay is defined as an additional sum paid to an employee whose work is superior and whose services are valued. Student achievement is defined as the act of completing a school course. My partner and I would now like to move on to our three contentions that to base merit pay off of student achievement, the U.S would have to come up with a plan so that teachers couldn't cheat the system, teachers don't get to choose who walk through the doors to their classroom and We shouldn't simply withhold money rewards from teachers who are ineffective: we should help them improve or evaluate them out of the profession.
Contention 1: To base merit pay off of student achievement, the U.S. would have to come up with a plan (extremely close to standardized testing) so that teachers couldn't cheat the system. This seems as though it would work out amazingly well, however it has been proven

home work should be banned

(Post Voting Period) why do kid need homeworkNot all the experiments are positive, though. In the 2010-2011 school year, the schools in Irving, Texas, stopped counting homework as part of a student"s grade. After six weeks, more than half the high school students were failing a class--a huge increase. The kids seem to lack the judgment and experience to know on their own when additional studying or work outside class is needed in order to pass tests and complete projects.

There ought to be a middle ground. Mandating "no homework" days or weekends, or setting guidelines for how much time children should spend on homework according to their age, seems reasonable.

One leading researcher, Harris Cooper at Duke University, recommends 10 minutes of homework a night for each grade a child is in. In other words, 10 minutes in first grade, 30 minutes in third grade, etc. For middle school and high school students, Cooper found no academic gains after one-and-a-half to two hours of h

Is literature important?

(Post Voting Period) <div><span style="font-size: large;">&nbsp; I feel very strongly that literature isn't important. Before I go into further detail why I would like to state what I am arguing about. Fictional literature, questions asked on fictional literature such as "What is the author trying to infer?"<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br />Job: I hope all of you reading this have a job. Now, I would like to ask you a question. At any point of your jobs, do you read fictional books or are asked "What is the author trying to infer?" Now most of you are probably thinking a literature teacher and an author both need literature but both of those Jobs are ones that continue the chain of literature. Furthermore, I haven't found one other job where literature comes up.<br />Time: If literature were not taken as an obligatory class, think of all the time saved in English class.I am almost sure that students learn vocabulary in a vocabulary book in Eng
