Global warming is likely (and mostly) anthropogenic

(Post Voting Period) This is for Subutai's environmental tournament.

In this debate, I am for the resolution. The BOP will be even since this is a contested issue--BOP shall not be negotiated.

The debate structure is first round acceptance, second round arguments (no rebuttals), third round rebuttals/defense, fourth round rebuttals/defense.

My opponent is familiar with the wording, and definitions are not needed.

Have fun!

Mankind Is the Main Cause of Global Warming

(Post Voting Period) You have asked to debate this first, so I am sending you the challenge directly. My last opponent on this subject forfeited, so I want to try this resolution again.

Full Resolution:

Mankind is the main cause of global warming. I, as con, will argue that it is of natural causes, not mankind.

We will NOT be arguing if global warming exists or not, it will be assumed that it does. Only if global warming has an anthropogenic cause.

Definitions:

Mankind: "The human race; human beings collectively without reference to sex; humankind."[1]

Main: "Chief in size, extent, or importance; principal; leading;"[2]

Cause: "A person or thing that acts, happens, or exists in such a way that some specific thing happens as a result; the producer of an effect."[3]

Global Warming: "Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century, and its projected continuation."[4]

The Earth is currently going through a global warming phase.

(Post Voting Period) Definitions.

"Global warming phase" – a time period of decent length (compared to a human lifespan) where the average global temperature increases. Over the course of this phase, average temperatures may fluctuate up and down, but the statistical trend is upward (example seen here [1]). In order to qualify, one must be able to extrapolate from the data that the average temperature will continue to increase over the next several decades (pending no action taken to prevent the current trend). So cherry picking data points to say "100 million years ago, it was warmer than now, so we are on a cooling trend" would need to be able to be shown as statistically accurate (i.e. not just two data points).

The BoP will be on me show the warming, while my opponent needs to either show cooling, or refute all evidence of warming.

Standard rules apply. No semantics, etc. My opponent is free to begin in R1, or pass and allow me to begin in R2.

Thank you.

Humans are the main cause of global warming

(Post Voting Period) The CON must prove humans do not play a significant role in global warming. I recommend a experienced debater that opposes global warming to debate with me.

EDIT: Per Ron-Paul's request, the resolution is changed and the voting period is now 1 month.

My Starting Arguments:

Yes, the Earth is warming. Since the early 20th century, Earth's mean surface temperature has increased by about 0.8 "C (1.4 "F), with about two-thirds of the increase occurring since 1980.[1]

Is it caused mainly by humans? Humans have increased the amount of Co2, a greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases increase the Earth's temperature.

"Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the burning of fossil fuels has contributed to the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from 280 ppm to 397 ppm, despite the uptake of a large portion of the emissions through various natural "sinks" involved in the carbon cycle."[2]

Plus, global warming could cause ice cap melting. Dan

Global warming (full resolution in debate)

(Post Voting Period) Resolution: The MAIN CAUSE of global warming is CO2 emissions made by humans

My opponent argues CO2 is the MAIN cause of global warming, I argue it is NOT the main cause.

Definitions:

CO2 emissions - [emission] A substance discharged into the air, especially by an internal combustion engine.[1] he chemical formula for carbon dioxide, a heavy odorless gas (CO2) formed during respiration and by the combustion or decomposition of organic substances; it is absorbed from the air by plants in photosynthesis. [2]

These definitions are flexible, BUT as they are common Knowles I have no need to explain HOW they can stretch, but as long as:
1) Its relevant
2) its not using semantics
3) its not trolling

RULES:

No trolling
No semantics
Also, this is to be a real debate, not a troll or semancized debate. Semantics or trolling is an auto FF on the whole debate.

To stop the usage of fossil fuel is the only way to combat global warming

(Post Voting Period) Dear Opponent,
Thanks for accepting for this debate.
Let's start the debate.
Fossil fuel has some major impacts in our lifes. It usage has resulted in economic development, job opportunities and environmental issues that is industrial revolution. Today, I will be speaking for the topic. The temperatures have been rising steadily but we have to stop it.rising temperatures is turning the life of living organisms.
I agree that there are other causes of global warming but fossil fuel is the most important one. It's burning have resulted in cheap and in mass way to produce energy but with the cost of our environment. It produces green house gases which pollutes our environment. It is resulted in shorter human life expectancy.

Human induced global warming exists

(Post Voting Period) Resolution: Human Induced Global Warming Exists

I will be arguing that the resolution is true and refute my opponent's claims, while my opponent will argue that it is false and also refute my claims. BOP is shared. No new arguments, only rebuttals in round 5.

Carbon Dioxide

a. Correlation to temperature

CO2 is increasing. In fact, the level of it in our atmosphere now is higher than any point in the past 800 thousand years. [1] Temperature records show that the temperature is increasing, [2] and that CO2 does have a strong correlation to the temperature,[3][2] without any apparent lag, as shown in the short term chart at [2].

b. Source of CO2

For the global warming to be caused by man, the CO2 has to be man made or have some kind of relationship to human activities. Generating electricity using fossil fuels is the largest single source of CO2 emissions in the United States, accounting for about 40% of the total CO2 emissions in 2009,[4] foll

global warming is cause by humans

(Post Voting Period) Scientists have concluded that most of the observed warming is very likely due to the burning of coal, oil, and gas. This conclusion is based on a detailed understanding of the atmospheric greenhouse effect and how human activities have been tweaking it. At the same time, other reasonable explanations, most notably changes in the Sun, have been ruled out.

The atmospheric greenhouse effect naturally keeps our planet warm enough to be livable. Sunlight passes through the atmosphere. Light-colored surfaces, such as clouds or ice caps, radiate some heat back into space. But most of the incoming heat warms the planet's surface. The Earth then radiates some heat back into the atmosphere. Some of that heat is trapped by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, including carbon dioxide (CO2). Human activity--such as burning fossil fuels--causes more greenhouse gases to build up in the atmosphere. As the atmosphere "thickens" with more greenhouse gases, more heat is held

Global Warming Exists

(Post Voting Period) I'll define some words to avoid semantics.

Global warming: The rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation. [1]

Greenhouse gas: A gas in an atmosphere that absorbs and emits radiation within the thermal infrared range.[2]

This is my actual argument:
"However, since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the burning of fossil fuels has contributed to the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from 280 ppm to 397 ppm, despite the uptake of a large portion of the emissions through various natural "sinks" involved in the carbon cycle."[2]

CO2 is a greenhouse gas, which has been increasing. Greenhouse gases cause the greenhouse effect, which heats our planet up. CO2 exists naturally in our atmosphere and keeps the planet warm. Now that it is increasing, our planet will get warmer.

"The greenhouse effect is a process by which thermal radiation from a planetary

(Voting Period) There, I said it. And it's true. Even scientists who "believe" humans are largely repsonsible for recent temperature changes will admit they do not have definitive proof. The PR campaign of the left claiming scientists "have reached" a consensus implies the research is finally complete. However, a "consensus" is only 51 percent, and no one is stopping to consider that legitimate science is a product of fact and not popularity or speculation in the absence of conclusive evidence. The liberals and environmentalists have swallowed the global warming theory hook, line and sinker, and accept it as though it were an undeniable truth. They even call opponents (who would rather rely on traditional standards of proof before making momentus policy decisions) "flat earthers." That is not a very good analogy considering flat earthers were the ones who relied on popular opinion ("consensus") versus real science.
