About Me:I've been on here since January 2015. I've transitioned on this site, from being a right libertarian with certain conservative inclinations to libertarian socialism, to where I am now, as a fairly standard liberal. I'm introverted and increasingly cynical these days, and I've got an INTJ personality, though I realize that the Myers-Briggs test is inaccurate. I intend to work in law, specifically litigation, at some point.
Activities:I debate formally, in the World Schools and British Parliamentary formats. Otherwise, I spend my time reading books, listening to music, writing blog posts, and doing school-related activities. I also try to log on to DDO everyday, to see what's going on. My life has probably been influenced by DDO more than anything else, and the community here has changed my life.
Beliefs:I'm a liberal, an atheist, and a rule utilitarian. I believe in constitutional democracy, and that minorities should be protected from the whims of the majority. Politically, I'm center-left, and usually support the Democrats in U.S. elections.
Books:Manufacturing Consent, Collapse, Arguably, Failed States, On Palestine, Animal Liberation, Practical Ethics, Debating The Death Penalty, A Brief History of Time, The Extended Phenotype, The Idea of Justice, India Unbound, David and Goliath, Freakonomics, Atheism: A Philosophical Justification, 9-11, The Point of View of the Universe, The Divine Comedy, A Tale of Two Cities, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, 1984, Deception Point, Cloud Atlas, The Iron Heel, Brave New World, His Dark Materials, House of Cards
Music:Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, Claude Debussy, Domenico Scarlatti, Yanni, Sufjan Stevens, Paramore, Alanis Morissette, Civil Twilight, Rickie Lee Jones, Pink Floyd, Mazzy Star, Dave Matthews, Gomez, Radiohead, The Black Ryder, Ben Howard, Radical Face, The Rolling Stones, Snow Patrol, The Beatles, The Who, Massive Attack, Ryan Adams, Awolnation, Jeff Buckley, Peter Gabriel, Michael Jackson, Frank Zappa, Lin-Manuel Miranda, David Bowie, Syd Barrett

Resolved: The United States ought to end its provision of arms to foreign insurgents.

This debate is part of the DDO May Tournament held by the lovely SolonKR, so I would like to thank him for hosting and my opponent, tejretics, for accepting this debate. Alright, let's get some definitions and rules out of the way first. Definitions Ought - Used to indicate a desirable or expected state. ( - The action of providing or supplying something for use. (

We should adopt Gold Standard

Definitions :1. The gold standard is a monetary system where a country's currency or paper money has a value directly linked to gold. With the gold standard, countries agreed to convert paper money into a fixed amount of gold. A country that uses the gold standard sets a fixed price for gold and buys and sells gold at that price. 2. Fiat money is currency that a government has declared to be legal tender, but...

Abortion should be illegal

Pro can either start arguing in Round 1 and waive the final round, or use the first round for acceptance alone, and allow me to start the debate in Round 2. No new arguments in the final round. "Abortion" refers to "the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy." Pro has to argue that abortion, in all stages of pregnancy, should be illegal (outside of cases when the mother's life is in danger, or cases of rape). I have to argue that abortion has to be allowed in at least certain stages...

Was there space before the universe came into existence.

I would argue no space is an impossibility. Trying to imagine no space is impossible. Because space always surrounds a point of nothingness....
