About Me:I've got a reasonably long history of college-level debate in both the American and the British parliamentary styles, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. The vast majority of my background is in the sciences, specifically microbiology, and I'm currently working on my PhD. Beyond that, I've taken a deep interest in history, though my focuses have been mostly focused on Mongolian, Napoleonic, and Israeli. That's pretty much me in a nutshell, so now I'll say why I'm here. I've joined a lot of various debate websites, and they've leaned one direction or the other. I'm always looking for a website where I can have a reasoned, thoughtful debate on a number of subject matters with people with whom I disagree. I hope this will be the place for that, and I look forward to finding out.
Activities:Debate, tennis, scientific research, reading, video games... well, this list is boring. You get the picture.
Beliefs:I'm a reform Jew, so I do believe in God, though as you'll learn if you talk to me, that view is very nuanced. However, the main reasons I remain a Jew are the sense of community that I feel is so important, and the focus on study and critical thinking that is the hallmark of this particular religion.
Books:Wow. This is going to take a while. Anything by Kurt Vonnegut. The man was a master of the craft, and we are all worse for his death. Cat's Cradle is a must read - if you haven't, do it. Sirens of Titan, Galapagos, and Harrison Bergeron should be on everyone's reading list. Catch-22 is the single greatest novel I've ever read. If you haven't, get to it. Joseph Heller is a mad genius. Fantasy series worth reading (in order of most awesome to least): Mistborn trilogy (seriously, Brandon Sanderson is one of the best authors I've ever seen), Old Kingdom trilogy (Garth Nix is only a shade behind, fantastic stuff), Game of Thrones (George R.R. Martin) and The Wheel of Time series (really long, and the ending wasn't as grand as it should have been, but Robert Jordan knew what he was about). Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is a must read, way better than the movie. Lastly, Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Best sci-fi I've ever read, bar none.
Movies:12 Years a Slave, Captain Phillips, Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, Princess Bride, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Gattaca, Anchorman (probably 2 too, haven't seen it yet), Ruby Sparks, Stranger than Fiction, Schindler's List, Ted (yes, I loved it), The Sandlot, Sin City, Austin Powers (1 and 2), The Back to the Future trilogy, the Star Wars trilogy, The Matrix, Kick Ass, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Young Frankenstein, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the original), The Wizard of Oz, Howl's Moving Castle, Aladdin, Dogma, Up, Wall-E, The Incredibles, Toy Story trilogy, Monsters Inc, The Dark Knight, Billy Madison, Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
Music:Aerosmith, Anberlin, Bad Religion, The Beatles, Bon Jovi, Bowling for Soup, The Bravery, Breaking Benjamin, Carolina Liar, Chevelle, Chris Daughtry, Coldplay, Creed, Daftpunk, Decyfer Down, Dido, Duran Duran, The Eagles, Earshot, Evanescence, The Exies, Fall Out Boy, Fireflight, Five For Fighting, Flyleaf, Foo Fighters, Foreigner, Franz Ferdinand, The Fray, Fuel, Globus, Goo Goo Dolls, Good Charlotte, Green Day, Hoobastank, Icon for Hire, Incubus, James Blunt, Jem, Jet, Jimmy Eat World, Keane, The Killers, Led Zepplin, Lifehouse, Lily Allen, Linkin Park, Lostprophets, Lux Aeterna, Maroon 5, Matchbook Romance, Matchbox Twenty, Midtown, Modest Mouse, Muse, My Chemical Romance, Nickelback, Nightwish, The Offspring, Oingo Boingo, OneRepublic, PANIC! At the Disco, Paramore, Simon & Garfunkle, A Perfect Circle, The Police, The Proclaimers, Queen, R.E.M., Radiohead, Red, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rise Against, Rolling Stones, Shinedown, Sirenia, Skillet, Smashing Pumpkins... there's more.

"So who decides what is right or wrong? Reality"? How did you learn of the reality that you speak of? The entire world is governed by the reasoning of dirty-minded adults. We"re able to obscure according to our obsessions. We"re never actually shown what reality is. In this case, the reality that you speak of is a half-baked nonsense that has been altered. Try to conform this bullshit reality into the one you want is like" trying to join two pieces of a puzzle that do not fit."

Thanks to my opponent, TeaPatriot, for both having this debate with me and making it fun. We decided not to prepare for this round, so it was rather loose, but I still enjoyed doing it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5xNYOSeYWs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5xNYOSeYWs...
