Activities:I love reading, writing, contemplating, and the discussion of interesting ideas. I also stay active, and my preferred sport is figure skating, at which I am competitive.
Beliefs:I believe in Langton's Ant.
Books:The Ender Saga, definitely. Also the Discworld series and the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy in Five Parts (the books or the radio plays, not the movie). I also enjoy some non fiction books, notably "Quantum Theory Cannot Hurt You" and "Why E=MC^2 and Why Should We Care", although many others fall into the same category. Also, as there is no section for poetry I'll add that I think "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" is fantastic, and I derive an odd pleasure from Sylvia Plath's work, particularly "The Applicant".
Movies:"Inception". Hands down. Although I might not care much for the action sequences (except for the thing with the rotating hotel. That's the sort of action sequence I approve of: not a lot of guns and fighting, just an amazing visual factor) the ideas it provokes are real food for thought. I'm also very fond of "Stranger than Fiction".
Music:Hans Zimmer, Murray Gold, Ilan Eshkeri, Two Steps From Hell, Lindsey Stirling, Owl City
Quotes:"Fantasy is the excersise bicycle of the mind - it won't take you anywhere, but it'll build up muscles that will." -Terry Pratchett

"I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by." -Douglas Adams

"Give a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day. Set fire to a man and he'll be warm for the rest of his life." -Terry Pratchett (I love this one simply because it's so horrible, and yet you can't quite argue with it)
Sports Teams:Muskateers, Nexxice, Skyliners, Team Berlin 1
TV Shows:"Doctor Who", a little. Although I don't watch TV much. I'm more of a reading person. Also "Death Note", although I'm not sure whether to put that in books, TV shows, or somewhere in the middle.

The English language should be expanded to accommodate new forms of language use, not compressed

Written language has evolved over the years to accommodate new ideas and ways of approaching them. This has taken the form of new words entering the language and new styles of writing becoming prominent. In this day and age we should take active measures to ensure that it continues to evolve in a way that best represents the way that language is used in a verbal sense, and the way that the modern world requires its use. When I say that written language ought to grow, I mean in terms of creat...

Science Fiction Cannot Be Literature

Hatstand
zebrafinchqueen

This is something I've seen flying around for a while: science fiction is given a bad name in literature. It's been carried to extremes, with some authors refusing to admit that their books are science fiction at all. I am not arguing that all science fiction is literature, any more than all realism is literature, but that the terms 'science fiction' and 'literature' aren't mutually exclusive. Literature is defined as: 1. Writings in which expression and form, in connection with ideas of...

Jobs for the boys

Logic_on_rails
Hatstand

Resolved: ‘Jobs for the boys’ is, on the whole, beneficial for society. ‘Jobs for the boys’ : “work that is given by someone who is in an important position to their friends or members of their family” , “appointments given to or created for allies or favourites” Note: This is intended as a debate that will have shades of humour and such throughout. I don’t expect my opponent to do copious research or do fantastic replies – I s...
