Morality is an Idea

KRFournier

I want to thank jason_hendirx for participating in this debate. After my last debate (http://www.debate.org/debates/An-atheist-is-unethical-for-the-mere-fact-that-he-is-atheist./1/comments/), he and I disagreed over the nature of morality so decided to debate it here instead of in the comments. Hopefully, I can better clarify my position within this format. I am against the resolution that morality is an idea. When discussing the nature of morality, it's important that it be taken seriousl...

Given the Bible, God is Morally Repugnant and Undeserving of Praise (+).

JustCallMeTarzan
InquireTruth

I could have simply phrased this debate "God is Morally Repugnant and Undeserving of Praise" but then I remembered a debate I was just in where the person who accepted the debate gets to define God. This is not the case here - for purposes of this debate, we shall defer to the Judeo-Christian sense of God, and if it pleases my opponent, we may use the same version of a "mainstream" Bible - I would suggest the New American Bible, for it is the one I shall present my opening arguments from. Th...

TheSkeptic
InquireTruth

Once again, I am deadbeat bored. So I decided to start another one of these! Note: the "1A" notation in the Topic title is simply for searching purposes. [Definition - Valid] http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/valid 1. sound; just; well-founded 2. Logic. (of an argument) s...

The Christian god is Fair

solo
InquireTruth

Resolved: The Christian god exists. The Christian god is not fair as described in the following bible passage: http://bibleresources.bible.com/passagesearchresults.php?passage1=Deuteronomy+32:4&version=51 Deuteronomy 32:4: 4 He is the Rock; his deeds are perfect. Everything he does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright he is! The Christian god is selective of whom he directly communicates with, which is just one example of unfairness....

What you don't know, won't hurt you --- it's ok to lie

Lightkeeper

It is well known that we do not always tell the truth. In fact, one might argue that we are morally and socially obliged to lie at times. "Do you like my new haircut?", she asks. "Do I have a big nose?", he wonders. (not a reference to Pinoccio, no pun intended!) "I'm sorry, I won't have a relationship with you. You're nice and all but I'm just not prepared for commitment at this point" (as opposed to "I think you're ugly") These are but some examples of lies that are in fact intended to ma...

Many uninsured can afford health insurance but refuse to make it a priority.

HandsOff

Ask a liberal why health insurance ought to be provided by the government, and they will tell you it is a necessity, and one that too many people cannot afford. I too agree that health insurance is a necessity. But if you look at how the uninsured spend their money you will see their spending habits hardly mirror their supposed convictions. I've never been uninsured, even as a dirt poor college student. Instead I sacrificed elsewhere to make my monthly health insurance payment. I realize the...

""God, as seen through the eyes of the biblical account cannot exist."

Ragnar_Rahl

"Matthew 19:26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible." Revelation 19:6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. " Luke 1:37 For with God nothing shall be impossible." Jeremiah 32:17,27 Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and s...
