Capitalism

My first debate in a very long time. I would like to keep the character limit at 4k if we could for readability and increasing participation in voting. The first two contentions are theoretical while the last one is practical. You can criticize the system we live by, but *** 1) We have this system for a good reason: it works. It has been nothing short of miraculous for 70 years straight in the US and the US has been and will be the best place to live in the world for the foreseeable fu...

Abortion is wrong

Da_King
Rob1Billion

This is a real debate, unlike stevos. I will argue that abortion is wrong in all cases. You will argue that it is ok, but not ok after a certain point (late-term abortions). This first round is just a clarification. I will begin my arguments at the second round....

Obama deserved the Nobel Peace Prize

Rob1Billion
kkdub

There has been a lot of stir about Obama's winning of the Nobel Peace Prize. I believe he was an excellent candidate, because of the wars he does not promote. Many of the below-mentioned wars are promoted by certain politicians and past Presidents, and since Obama does not follow in their footsteps he deserves credit (even if he hasn't been active in condemning them up until now). 1) WAR IN THE MIDDLE EAST- Obama obviously cannot be blamed for starting this, and he has done a good job so far...

Exploiting people's superstitions for profit should be made a criminal offence

brian_eggleston
Rob1Billion

I once sat on a plane behind a timid old lady who was clearly a very nervous flier. She was sat in row 13 and I was sat in row 14 and she turned round to me and said that she believed 13 was an unlucky number and that she owed it to her grandchildren to arrive safely and that she would be be very much obliged if I would swap seats with her. I explained to her that if we swapped seats so that the bad luck was transferred from her to me and the gods decided to punish me for sitting in row 13 by...

Intelligent extraterrestrial life forms would be viewed as Christians by millions of people

Rob1Billion
JBlake

Please note the 1,000 character limit. 2 hypothetical scenarios: 1) We discover intelligent life that is relatively near our stage of development (both biologically and technologically) on another planet. 2) Aforementioned life lands on Earth (not clandestine {it is sad that I have to specify this}). A significant amount of people (many of which Americans) would likely view these life-forms as Christians....

Temperance, fortitude, prudence, and justice form a flawless basis for morality

Nail_Bat
Rob1Billion

I would like to explore a topic that Rob1Billion and I began debating in the comments section of another debate. It is my belief that morality can not be reduced to a set of unambiguous laws. That is to say, we can not find a set of laws that will always yield the same results for moral questions as our intuition would give. My opponent will argue that the morality of an action depends on four unambiguous, unchanging qualities: Temperance, fortitude, prudence, and justice. I will let him...

On balance, the pen is mightier than the sword.

Rob1Billion
Yraelz

The pen is mightier than the sword. This maxim was created to explain how the written word has much more impact on humanity than does warfare. For example, I will use the Bible and the U.S. Constitution. The Bible and U.S. Constitution were both created with the pen. The Bible has had effects on humanity that are quite beyond measure. The creation of Christianity (a direct result of the writing of the Bible) has had such pronounced effects on humanity that I cannot even begin to list th...

Universal healthcare

Rob1Billion
HandsOff

I would lke to challenge Handsoff to a debate on universal healthcare. The match will be scheduled for four rounds so that I can blow off my first round with pleasantries. My only debate with you, handsoff, was not very competitive and I would like the chance for a good exchange with you. I saw you were against universal healthcare, so I just threw it up there. I haven't, as of yet, read any of your debates but I see your record is exemplary and I would like to take a crack at you! Our last d...

God is dead

Rob1Billion
mrmatt505

God is dead. Mankind has emerged from its infancy, and no longer needs to use superstition to explain natural phenomena. If an earthquake hits your town, your not going to run around to try and find a human sacrifice to sate your deity. Science has continually proven any and all religions wrong time and time again, and the only hope religion has is to reformulate its doctrine to agree with science. Do you know that the church now embraces the big bang theory? What a far cry from the days of p...

Agnosticism should be considered as genuine a religion as Christianity

Rob1Billion

Why not? Why does religion have to be linked with superstition before it is considered genuine..........
