Unvoted

I don't mean to be a bother in posting this again, but there's less than a day left, and no one has voted on it.

Is twisting semantics valid?Posted 7 years Ago

If the instigator is careless & doesn't define terms, nor do they state "no semantics".
Can the contender win by using a definition which was obviously unintended?
(I'm not talking about wild sophistry, where you change the entire meaning of the sentence, so that it has nothing to do with the intended sentence, &/make the resolution totally incomprehensible.)

Technically yes, but it's (at least from my perspective and in my eyes) frowned upon. Not a moral or intellectual evil of a kind, but it's very pedantic and annoying, and really only serves to stifles conversation, not encourage it.

Could you explain what the different colours stand for? I didn't notice any form of key on your graphs.

Porn Addiction SciencePosted 7 years Ago

So can, literally, ANYTHING. That's pretty much the basis of neuroplasticity.

I wish people would stop using big words in deceptive ways. And I wish people would stop using addiction as a buzzword. Love is an addiction to another person. Hiking can be an addiction. Gardening can be an addiction. READING can be an addiction. An addiction, when it is defined broadly enough to include pornography, refers to anything that we would consider an interest. Anything which we like to do, and which we become unhappy when we do not do for a long time. Under this definition, homesickness is withdrawal. It's nonsense. Why are people constantly trying to expand the definitions of words until they become meaningless?

I agree completely, especially with that last sentence.

I've basically all but stopped dealing with words, as they are constantly changing and what people are trying to use them for is just confusing and pointless. I just jump straight to the point usually: Explain how X is bad or harmful.

In the case of porn, you want to label it an addiction? Fine.

Now explain why this is a bad thing. Because that's all that matters.

Alternative Propositions to EvolutionPosted 7 years Ago

Ha ha.

I'm serious though, are there any other serious theories or propositions that have intellectual merit, or is Evolution the only thing out there?

Alternative Propositions to EvolutionPosted 7 years Ago

I've been wondering for awhile now if there are any strong theories or propositions other than Evolution, as all I ever see are arguments between Intelligent Design, Creationism, and Evolution. Is anyone familiar enough with alternative ideas that they may name and explain them?

rross, clarify for me real fast. Are you asking what the logical justification is, or are you asking what the justification used by the relevant parties is?
