About Me:Debate in school. Something of a music nerd, geek in general. Here to improve debatorial prowess. ^_^
Activities:Debating, music, anything related to it. :P Play guitar, have done for 6 years, also a pianist and a newcomer to saxophone. I write, but I'm terribly shy about it.
Beliefs:Haters gonna hate
Books:Lord of the Rings, (I'm named after Samwise Gamgee) Harry Potter, anything by Charles Dickens, but to sum up my tastes in a word: bleak. The Road by Cormac McCarthy is perhaps my all-time favourite. Goethe's Faust, if it counts. As a dramatist? Hmm, Shakespeare, Wilde, Martin MacDonnagh, maybe. Oh, and I like Keats. A lot. Gary Shteyngart's "Super Sad True Love Story" is what I'm currently on, absolutely excellent.
Movies:The Road, actually, they did quite a good job on it! Lord of The Rings was also tremendously brilliant. I tend to like adaptations but there's always the stock classics like Citizen Kane or The Godfather. You know, stuff that everyone likes. I would probably name David Fincher as a favourite director, though. Fight Club!
Music:I'm one of those people who takes this field too seriously. I like Neutral Milk Hotel, (best thing ever) The Smtihs, and Radiohead a lot, some classical, some jazz, etc.
Quotes:"Be gone! Last words are for fools who have not said enough!"

- Karl Marx, to his nurse, on his deathbed. Win.
Sports Teams:No.
TV Shows:Peep Show is all I can stand. Well, IT Crowd, Mighty Boosh, etc... Television is a good medium for comedy but not much else, I usually catch up online or something, not big into TV.

The Death Penalty

Looking for a serious intellectual debate on this topic here. I had a long and very interesting conversation with a friend about this and would like to see how my arguments stand up here. R1) Introduction of argument R2) Main body of argument R3) Cross examination of opponent's argument R4) Defence of own argument R5) Conclusion of argument I will first define the debate as a whole. I, as the Proposition, take it upon myself to prove that the Death Penalty (that is to say the state-spo...

Mozart's Music Suffers from Having Too Many Notes

Insert-strange-name-here

Purely for fun, as I know Insert-strange-name-here personally in real life. This is a general argument which we have and would like somewhat resolved. First round: Introduction Second round: Argument Third: Rebuttal/Conclusion I shall provide a definition for the sake of clarity: The music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is, while technically dazzling and occasionally sublime, more often than not overwrought, emotionally turgid, and therefore, overrated. Ground rules: 1. All po...

History Will Not Look Kindly on the First Decade of the 21st Century

Mencies

I would first like to thank my opponent in advance for accepting this challenge. I am arguing this same position on this same motion in a few weeks. In any case, in this debate, I will be attempting to prove that history will not look kindly on the first decade of the 21st century. As the instigator of this debate, I feel it falls upon me to define this motion for the purposes of the debate, and so I will define it that future generations will view the years between 2000 and 2009 in a...

When helen was a child, her father raped her too hard and she lost those 3 senses. I'm not saying she deserved it, that's just how it happened. Just sayin....

History Will Not Look Kindly on the First Decade of the 21st Century

I would first like to thank my opponent in advance for accepting this challenge. I am arguing this same position on this same motion in a few weeks for the City Schools final. That doesn't sound like a big deal, but hey, it's the biggest competition I'm eligible to enter. In any case, in this debate, I will be attempting to prove that history will not look kindly on the first decade of the 21st century. As the instigator of this debate, I feel it falls upon me to define this motion for t...
