About Me:I am on my way back to grad school while teaching full time in a rural Oregon high school. Anything for the benjamins, baby! Other than that, not much to tell. Ask if you have questions.
Activities:I wear several hats: English Language Arts teacher, grad student, competitive debate and public speaking coach for a school district other than the one I teach in, dog enthusiast (I own a newfie puppy- 3 months old), cooking fanatic (ex-professional baker), and all around fun-haver...
Beliefs:I hold few steadfast beliefs, as the knowledge I gain on a regular basis continues to change them. I suppose I do hold one relatively firm belief: everything changes, and everything is relative to circumstances and the schema we find ourselves in. Heck, I don't even believe in God... :D
Books:Tough decisions...The Stand (Stephen King); Snow Crash (Neal Stephenson); Any Shakespeare anthology; Paradise Lost (John Milton) & my John Donne anthology (I know, both poets, but they didn't specify no poetry...)
Movies:The Shawshank Redemption is by far and away my favorite movie. Everything else depends on...say it with me now...the situation!
Music:Mountain Goats; Neutral Milk Hotel; Perfect Circle; 10 Years; Spoon; Clint Mansell; Muse; NIN; Korn; Choral Music (choir kid for 9 years); Death Cab for Cutie (the good stuff); some marimba music...etc...
Quotes:Batter my heart, three-person'd God ; for you
As yet but knock ; breathe, shine, and seek to mend ;
That I may rise, and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp'd town, to another due,
Labour to admit you, but O, to no end.
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captived, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly I love you, and would be loved fain,
But am betroth'd unto your enemy ;
Divorce me, untie, or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me. ~ Nothing like a man who can compare intercourse and Western religion so gracefully that you have to do a double take after you finally get it...I do love John Donne.
Sports Teams:Atlanta Braves (from childhood), multiple baseball teams (I just like baseball...).
TV Shows:I choose not to have cable, but I do hulu The Office regularly.

Argumenetive Essay Contest

Through the course of this debate, both my opponent and I will write three different short argumentative essays. The prompt for each essay will be provided by either opponent before the start of the round. The first, and last rounds will be off the flow in terms of judging, and will be for clarifications, greetings, and comments. Also my opponent should post my essay prompt in the comments section before posting his or her acceptance round. We will both follow this pattern, and post the essay pr...

New Member Debate: (Domestic) Gun Proliferation

Alright, hopefully the debates I present can be interesting. Also, sources are optional for the time being-- we all have the ability to google facts and can do so on the fly. I assume we can all tell the differences between legitimate & erroneous sources. I will open without researching what I currently understand, (should make it easier yes?). ---------------------------------------------------- I posit that gun control in the US is both unconstitutional and counter-productive. ---...

Without God there is no reason of morality

Without God there are no morals This will be my first debate. So far I am disappointed in the weak attempts to prove gay marriage is wrong, but that is for another day. I begin my debating career with the strong and daring statement: without God there are no morals. Everyone who does not believe in God and some who do will undoubtedly object to this. Remember, I am not saying people who do not believe in God have no morals, but the God is the reason for their moral standard. My opponent will at...

The Walt Disney Company is the greatest entertainment company of all time.

Its my first debate ever on this website, and I'm really excited about it! It is my contention that The Walt Disney Company is the greatest entertainment company of all time. This is easily seen through the examination of its role in expanding the entertainment industry, and the companies overall influence in different entertainment markets. Contention 1: The Walt Disney Company is responsible for revolutionizing the entertainment industry. Subpoint A. In 1937, Disney released Snow Whit...

The penny should be immediately discontinued. (Kleptin Tourney)

I'd like to thank my opponent, Sportsguru, for providing such fit meat for debate, and Kleptin for organizing a tournament with such a unique premise. This is a RD 1 debate for Kleptin's tournament, and I will be assuming the role of Sportsguru from the following debate: Feel free to peruse it prior to reading this one. Sportsguru will, in effect, be opposing himself (or at least arguments inspired by his own). Hence, if you see chunks of text directly quote...
