Atheism is not a religion. Pro and Con share BOP. First round is acceptance, second round is arguments, third round is rebuttals, fourth round is arguments and rebuttals to rebuttals, and fifth round is closing arguments and rebuttals.

Okay, acceptance.
Debate Round No. 1

Thank you for your acceptance.

First, I will define religion. From the online dictionary Merriam-Webster, religion is defined as "a the belief in a god or in a group of gods : an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods." Atheism, on the other hand, is defined as disbelief in the existence of deity, the doctrine that there is no deity."

But the word religion has many meanings. It is a muddled concept, one that has been changed and redefined over thousands of years. However, the main point is that there is always a god or gods to worship. You take the main four religions in the world; Christianity, Hindiusm, Islam, and Judaism, and there is a belief in a God or gods. Religion, they worship certain symbols or venerate them. Such as in Christianity, they venerate the saints while worshipping Jesus as the Son of God. In Islam they worship Allah, who is the same god as the Jews and the Christians.

Atheism, does not worship anything. They merely lack belief in a deity. Religion is a belief in gods or god. You may be able to say that Atheism is a belief that god doesn't exist. It is not. It is merely a disbelief, in which they are merely rejecting the notion that there is a God.

That is all the time I have for now. I shall await your response.

Sixteen years as a Catholic;;

I disagree with your '...main point is that there is always a god or gods to worship.' as religion can be more habit, or faith in a personal set or institutionalized system of principles, beliefs, and practices.

Highlighted by the following sources provided by yourself,

': an interest, a belief, or an activity that is very important to a person or group'

'Broadly speaking, some religions (e.g., Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) are outwardly focused, and others (e.g., Jainism, Buddhism) are inwardly focused.'
Debate Round No. 2

Con did not address my main arguments concerningt this debate. Atheism is not a religion. Religions always have something spirtual involved. Seeking self-enlightenment, seeking peace, all that wonderful stuff. Atheism on the other hand does not. It seeks to have a disbelief, not a belief, in a god or gods.

Based on the definition of religion as "an interest, a belief, or an activity that is very important to a person or group", almost anything could be classified as a religion. So yes atheism could be considered a religion, but so would stamp collecting, being a fan of a particular sports team, or believing in Santa Claus.

In my humble opinion, calling atheism is a religion is like calling bald a hair color. It's is definitely a belief system, but I wouldn't classify it as a religion.

Just like christianity, hinduism, judaism or any other religion, atheism is a BELIEF. We just BELIEVE that there is no god.

Reasons for voting decision: Definitions key to an argument, should be in the first round... What we have here is con using an alternative definition from the same source, to disagree with the premise on which pro's argument is based. Neither argued after that... Anyway a bit of a complex issue, as it varies atheist to atheist (I'd say some treat it as a religion in all ways defined, but such is outside the argument). Conduct however is a clear cut matter with those forfeits (admittedly argument probably would have gone to pro, had the debate continued in the direction it was heading, as things were the thoughts were just incomplete.)
