Family Guy is the best TV Show EVER and everybody can agree with me on that.

I thank my opponent for starting this debate. I've only just now noticed that each round is 3 hours, not 3 days, so this is going to be a little rushed. I will be mostly posting in dot points.

My opponent has provided nothing other than his opinion is Round 1, so I will start this debate by posting a number of attributes a good comedy show should possess, and show how Simpsons trumps Family Guy in every one.

a) WRITING
This goes without saying really. Family Guy's writing is extremely lazy. I won't pretend I don't get a laugh out of some of the jokes, but I can not respect the writers one bit. Simpsons in its prime is the most well-written, clever 22 minutes of television you are ever likely to see.

To further prove this point, you only have to look at the reputation Family Guy has with other writers in the genre. As with so many other things, Trey Parker and Matt Stone (creators/writers of South Park) put it best in the audio commentary to an episode of South Park. They said that within the industry, Family Guy is considered to be similar to Justin Timberlake.... extremely popular and nobody within the industry can work out why. As Matt Stone said, "Family Guy, to comedy people, it's kind of what that band the Offspring is to real punk rockers."

b) LONGEVITY
- The Simpsons is the longest-running American sitcom, the longest-running American animated program, and the longest running American primetime entertainment series.
- Family Guy, on the other hand, has already been cancelled once, after just 3 seasons.

c) ORIGINALITY
The Simpsons is a cartoon set in suburban America, about a bumbling father, his stay-at-home-mother wife, their son, daughter, baby and dog.
Family Guy is a cartoon set in suburban America, about a bumbling father, his stay-at-home-mother wife, their son, daughter, baby and dog.
Simpsons came first.

Also, there used to be an excellent video on YouTube of the many times Family Guy flat out stole jokes from the Simpsons, but it doesn't appear to still be up. Rest assured, there were many.

d) CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
In addition to the multi-dimensional main cast of the Simpsons, there are literally hundreds of supporting characters, each with their own idiosyncrasies, catch phrases, etc. Many of them have had episodes based entirely upon them, resulting in a very complex, developed cast. See: http://www.thesimpsonstv.net...

Family Guy has nowhere near as many: http://www.garmentdistrict.com...

Also, Family Guy's main cast is ridiculously under-developed compared to the Simpsons. Because of the stupid flashbacks and lack of continuity, we know very little about them at all, and most of what we do "know" of them has been contradicted by other information we're given. This is lazy writing at best, and bad writing at worst.

e) INFLUENCE
- When the Simpsons came along, as far as prime-time comedies went, the Cosby Show was about as funny, risque, pertinant, intelligent as it got. The Simpsons changed all that, and I would go as far as to say it created the modern adult-oriented cartoon. We would not have South Park, Family Guy, Futurama, etc. without it.
- Homer's exclamatory catchphrase "D'oh!" has been adopted into the English lexicon. This is pretty amazing stuff.

f) AWARDS, HONOURS, ETC.
- The Simpsons has won plenty of awards in its long run, including 25 Primetime Emmy Awards, 26 Annie Awards and a Peabody Award. Family Guy has only been nominated for eleven Emmy Awards, with three wins. Sure, Simpsons has been around longer, but we can normalize the numbers by year, or otherwise consider the ratio of nominations to wins... both turn out in favor of the Simpsons.
- The Simpsons has won countless other awards too... so many that there is a Wikipedia page written on the topic alone (Not so for Family Guy). http://en.wikipedia.org...
- Time magazine named the Simpsons the 20th century's best television series, and have never so much as said a kind word about Family Guy.
- The Simpson family was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, an honour usually reserved for real people, not fictional ones. This is an extraordinary acheivement to say the least.

I'll leave it there for now and see what my opponent has to say. Thanks.

All arguments extended. As I have successfully argued in this debate, the Simpsons is clearly superior to Family Guy.

you already lose the debate because I'm considered part of everyone and I disagree with you.

Too easy. Family guy just consists of a bunch of random flashbacks usually steered at 60s-80s pop culture references. For instance, in one episode, we see Peter turn into Wonder-man by doing the spin which Wonder-Woman would do in the Wonder-Woman series. That's all that happens. The joke? That Wonder-Woman was a series? *yawn*

I'm weighing up whether or not to accept this.

Positives:
- It's an easy win for me
- Gives me a chance to debate the one thing I truly care about... TV

Negatives:
- I don't really have the time
- Everyone who matters already knows the Simpsons pwns, so I wouldn't be proving anything new
- I think my opponent is the same guy who started a similar debate with Lwerd and ended up forfeiting

Hmm...
