I believe that gun violence must stop and that guns should not be in the hands of people who have a criminal background or are mentally ill. (Only some kinds of mental illnesses)

I agree with you that gun violence must be stopped. However, do you have a specific solution to this problem?

@backwardseden obama had the cdc conduct a study on gun violence

According to the study, "Unintentional firearm-related deaths have steadily declined during the past century." Accidental deaths resulting from firearms accounted for less than one percent of all unintentional fatalities in 2010.

Firearm-related suicides " though receiving far less public attention " significantly outnumber homicides for all age groups, with suicides accounting for approximately 60 percent of all firearm injury fatalities in the United States in 2009.

the study also looked at the effect of having firearms available for self-defense, and found that firearms are much more likely to be used in a defensive manner rather than for criminal or violent activity.

"Defensive uses of guns by crime victims is a common occurrence, although the exact number remains disputed. Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year, in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008."

"More recent prisoner surveys suggest that stolen guns account for only a small percentage of guns used by convicted criminals. " According to a 1997 survey of inmates, approximately 70 percent of the guns used or possessed by criminals at the time of their arrest came from family or friends, drug dealers, street purchases, or the underground market."

@Edgar99scash - That's one of the absolute dumbest things of all time. You obviously haven't done any research AT ALL. Those who are vets/ and or in the army commit suicide on average 22 to 23 per day by guns.

heres the solution.keep guns within the military people in service only and ban all firearms aka guns.from the world there fore bringing down shootings and killings including suicide.and are money towards guns should be spent.on better military surviliance technology such as drones and future armed.people in service drivin.
make sense?

Con wow do you have it all wrong. 60 minutes did an article on the very issue of the mentally ill and guns a few years ago. Here's the problem. How do you stop/ help/ correct the mentally ill if they do not know if they are mentally ill? Do you want to go and pound on every---single door just to see if someone IS mentally ill? And who would make that determination? Sorry. Its not a mentally ill problem at all. Guns are a mental health issue. BIG DIFFERENCE. Our very big idiot at the helm of the big white barn with his cabbage batbrain doesn't get it because he's all about winning and nothing else. So in reality how can anything possibly get done properly even though what the kids did today, and I hope they keep doing it, is 100% correct, and idiot politicians and especially perhaps the most corrupt company that has ever graced this burping country has ever existed, namely the NRA, are 100% wrong?

I almost took on the debate, but I can't stretch my pro gun beliefs to "we should allow the insane and violent criminals legal access to purchase a firearm."
