I love the country America i do but when it comes to guns it is seriously behind the times. There have been mass shootings happening more and more frequently and people are saying that we need more guns! You can't shoot your way to peace! I hear people saying "guns don't kill people, People do". Well that is partially true but if that person did not have a gun then they would not be able to kill people so easily. Yeah people kill people using guns but by letting more or less everyone have access to guns you are making it easy for them to kill people on this big of a scale. Even if you are not willing to give up your guns at least don't let anyone have access to them. There should be a much stricter process when buying a gun : there should be age restrictions, People with a criminal record should not be able to get a gun, Somebody with mental health should not have a gun, Like when you are learning to drive there should be theory and practical test that you have to pass. If you pass all this then you can only have a certain type of gun and it should be kept locked away when not in use so nobody is able to take it easily. Also this test and process c=should be redone every year. America, You need to change because if you don't then more and more people are going to die. Natural disasters are just tragedy's we can't prevent them but deaths by guns and mass shootings you can stop that and you need to stop that. Please American government do not let anymore people die because you are to stubborn and idiotic to change a law to reduce the number of shootings in your country.

I accept:

>There should be a much stricter process when buying a gun : there should be age restrictions, People with a criminal record should not be able to get a gun, Somebody with mental health should not have a gun, Like when you are learning to drive there should be theory and practical test that you have to pass.

Having limitations of criminals and mentally ill people are already in effect, There are already age regulations on acquiring a weapon per a state wide basic legally. Having citizens armed can actually stop shooters, Robbers, Or rapists by withdrawing the gun.

>If you pass all this then you can only have a certain type of gun and it should be kept locked away when not in use so nobody is able to take it easily.
If there is a shooter, And your gun is at home locked in a safe, It it useless. If you have it concealed carry you can actually save lives by targeting the shooter with the gun.

> there should be theory and practical test that you have to pass. If you pass all this then you can only have a certain type of gun and it should be kept locked away when not in use so nobody is able to take it easily. Also this test and process c=should be redone every year.
Why waste taxpayers money and time with reeducation classes every year and how on earth will this be enforced? With the police showing up with guns? What would this test even include "don't go on mass shootings and kill innocent people". Well that is obvious and anyone crafty enough can lie on an examination.

Guns protect a citizen from an authoritarian regime as well. If America becomes a military state with only authority having guns, Citizens having guns is the primary way to make a stand against corruption.

Having everyone have weapons also helps secure the defense of America against any form of foreign invasion "A gun behind every bush" is what was

>You need to change because if you don't then more and more people are going to die.

Everyone dies. Heart Disease, Obesity, And Cancer kill far more people then any shooter, Does this mean that we should outlaw Mcdonalds and other junk food too? Should we force obese people to take health classes every year and have cards which limit junk food consumption?

Your entire argument falls apart with one thing: The Black Market. Even if the USA made having a gun illegal, People can easily bypass all tests, Background checks, Law and restrictions by purchasing a weapon on the deep web/a secret gun show. We have learned from prohibition that the sale/purchasing of illegal things Increase when it is outlawed.

1. You cannot reduce gun crimes with more guns! The mores guns there is the more violence in the world. Bedsides if you just got rid of guns altogether or had stricter gun laws then it is not likely that there would even be a shooter in the first place. Look at the UK, There has only been 1 mass shooting since stricter gun laws were put in place. In America, Mass shootings are happening on a regular basis and your solution is more guns! You have tried that and it clearly has not worked, It is time for America to make a change! Masses of people are dying on a regular basis and you are doing nothing effective!

2. Why waste money on things that can kill people? ! I think just like your driving test you should have to pay for this test and to have a licence for a gun. The practical test would ensure that you actually know how to use a gun safely. The theory test would be the part where you mental health, And your background is checked and yes I admit people could lie BUT it would still make it that little bit harder for people to access guns and could prevent some gun crimes from happening. It is worth doing even if it only saves a few lives.

3. If you don't like the way your country is run you should not be protesting with a gun anyway as that would be murder. The police and the military are there to protect you from any foreign invasion so you do not need a gun for that either. "a gun behind every bush" I believe is a terrible saying because that implies that you are living your life in constant paranoia and fear and that is no way to live. America has a very good police force and military as far as I am aware and they are there to protect you so I do not think you need to worry about having a gun on you at all times.

4. How is taking away guns going to make more people die of gun crime! You cannot shoot your way to peace!

5. Cancer is not something that can be prevented. It is not a choice. You cannot compare someone dying because somebody shot them to somebody dying of cancer. America has the power to reduce gun crime, That is a fact you can reduce the amount of deaths due to a gun. I don't understand how you even think its okay to compare cancer and murder.

6. Yes there will always be the black market and you will never be able to completely get rid of the guns in America but putting these laws in place will decrease gun crime massively. It will make it so much harder for people to access guns and therefore the amount of shootings will go down. Look at the UK, Japan and many other countries who have enforced strict gun laws. Look at the amount of gun deaths in them counties and then look at the amount of gun deaths in America and try and tell me that the number of shootings will go up. These laws have worked everywhere else so now America it is time for you do make a change and help the people in your country. You can reduce the gun crime massively if you take a step, Be brave and stop hiding behind you guns.

You seem to be getting emotional so allow me to counter this with a logical argument.

FIrst: The quote I was reffering too was this: You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.

Second: There has been dozens of cases of mass shooters getting killed/wounded and subdued until police have arrived on the scene. Without a gun to counter the bad guys gun these people would have killed much more people. That is how more guns makes everyone safer. If an armed gunman or gunwoman is shooting up a location, That gun can protect and save lives by stopping the shooter right in their tracks.

> Look at the UK, There has only been 1 mass shooting since stricter gun laws were put in place.

Since stricter gun laws took place in the UK, The amount of stabbings have skyrocketed through the roof. More people are getting stabbed in the UK then ever before and I bet this would go down if more citizens were armed. Lets not forget about terrorists running over people with cars ect.

A test like this already exists, It isn't a test but a conceal carry permit class. An instructor shows you how to properly use a weapon responsibly and how to act if there is a mass shooter. It is required in order to get a concealed carry permit in most states.

>The police and the military are there to protect you from any foreign invasion so you do not need a gun for that either

If the commander in chief is corrupt and using these forces has his personal army, Then a well regulated militia is needed. I am stating this because this very thing is why the second amendment was made in the first place. Because the authority had weaponry but the common people didn't. You never know what the future holds for you, Especially if there is a second civil war and people are going crazy.

>How is taking away guns going to make more people die of gun crime! You cannot shoot your way to peace!

Only people left with guns will be criminals. Less responsible citizens having weaponry that could prevent crimes. Police cannot be everywhere at once and could abuse there power.

>5. Cancer is not something that can be prevented. It is not a choice. You cannot compare someone dying because somebody shot them to somebody dying of cancer. America has the power to reduce gun crime,

My main point to this was about heart disease and unhealthy eating. Also smoking causes cancer which is preventable. You never presented any factual argument to counter my original claim. Should we ban Mcdonalds and regulate the amount of junk food in our country as well? Heart disease and other illnesses caused by unhealthy eating kills more Americans then any gun has.

Implementing an all out gun ban not only goes against the foundation of our country but will also cause great civil unrest with the amount of gun owners there are in this country who don't want to give up the only thing keeping them alive in situations with a robber, A rapist, Or a spre shooter.

If only the police and military have weapons that could lead to wide spread corruption.

All of your suggestions how to improve gun control are already in effect. Yes fully automatic killing machines should not be legal.

1. If you banned guns then it is not likely that there would even be a mass shooting in the first place so civilians would not need to own a gun to protect themselves. I know that you can never completely prevent gun crime but the amount of cases will decrease massively. It has worked everywhere else and so I don"t see why it wouldn"t work in America.

2. In 2018 there is only around 100 people who have been killed due to knives in the UK. More people have been injured but there has only been a fairly small amount of deaths. Also, This year in the UK 37 people have died due to terror attacks. The USA however, In 2018 so far 9662 people have been killed due to gun crime and there has been 154 mass shootings. 456 children aged 0-11 have been killed or injured by a gun in the USA this year and 1915 teenagers aged 12-17. These are shocking figures. Yes knife and terrorism have increased recently in the UK however in is still nowhere near on the scale of how many people die due to guns in America. And with knives it is much harder to kill people in masses which is why the number of knife deaths in the UK is much lower. It is difficult to compare Uks knife crime and America"s gun crime as gun crime in America happens so much more frequently and on a much larger scale.

3. This test that you do have to do clearly is not a good enough test as it is allowing mentally unwell people as young as 18 to have access to a gun. It is not helping to prevent bad people getting guns which suggests to me that guns should be a lot harder to get hold of and that this test should be much stricter.

4. It is not likely that the police will turn against you as most do their job to help people not to hurt them. Also, Another civil war where everyone is armed would be fatal for America because everyone would just be shooting each other and in the end there would be nobody left! And I am sure some Americans have a good reason for having a gun. I get that you believe you need it to protect yourself. However gun crime has gotten so out of hand and it is time to have tighter gun control and to stop more or less anyone having access to a gun.

5. We shouldn"t be making it so easy for people to kill and if we stopped gun crime hopefully civilians would not need to protect themselves with a gun. And as I said before the majority of police get that job because their care about their country and they want to help people not to destroy it.

6. I believe that obesity, Heart disease etc are other big issues that America need to deal with as the amount of people that die due to being overweight is shocking. And I do believe more rules and laws should be put in place to reduce this. However, This debate is about gun crime and to reduce death to to guns not about obesity. But it is sort of the same idea. People are dying due to eating masses of junk food, Take away the junk food they can"t eat it and so have to eat something more healthy, Death fiend to obesity goes down. People are dying due to gun crime, Take away the gun, People cannot kill anyone with a gun, Gun crime decreases massively.

7. There are more ways of protecting yourself than just using a gun. For example how about every American learns self defence. Take away the guns and there will be a minimal amount of gun crime. Someone has a knife learn how to disarm someone with a knife, Someone"s robbing your house, Learn self defence and then you are able to get them out of your house. You can use fighting skills and self defence to protect yourself from a lot of things and you don"t have to be really strong and have a lot of muscle either.

8. I know America is a country with a culture very different to mine and they are very devoted to their guns however it is time for a change because the amount of gun deaths is increasing everyday and more and more people, Including children re dying because America does want to lay their guns go. Children are stating to be afraid to go to school because of the increase of mass shootings. This is not the type of world a child should be growing up in. School should be a place to learn and feel safe and happy but instead it"s a place where they have to learn what to do if somebody comes into the school with a gun and starts shooting. It just isn"t right.

What I"m saying is that tighter guncontrol had worked out for the better more often than not. But maybe your right maybe it won"t stop a lot of gun crime and maybe people will get guns from the Mexican border but even if it reduces gun crime by just a small amount and just one persons life is saved isn"t that worth it? And what about the process you have to go through in Japan? Do you not think that would be a good idea for America?

Lawlessness describes either a lack of laws or more relevant to this case, The lack of adherence to laws. Venezuela is among the most lawless countries of the world, Hence I've called it lawless
Posted by darkwolf 3 years ago

@dustryder how so they have laws which the criminals ignore, Just like the criminals here do.
@mollie24 both Australia and Britain have a lower population and had less guns in circulation. Hence what you said before just because it worked in 1 country doesn't mean it will work in America. And it still would be very easy to get a gun, Because you can have them brought over the border from Mexico by the cartel. In case you didn't know that's where many criminals get their guns so they aren't put on record.

But Venezuela IS a lawless country. . .

Just because it didn"t work in one country doesn"t mean it won"t work in America. There are plenty of counties where it has worked.
Look at Australia for example. Following a mass shooting in 1996 in which 35 people were killed the country installed a mandatory buyback of certain types of guns and a ban on buying them in the future. As a result, Australia have not had enough mass shooting since. It did not erase gun violence completely but it did reduce it. In 2014 there were only 35 gun related murders and there was also a 74% drop in gun related suicides.
In the U. K, After a mass shooting in 1996 handguns were banned and there was a buyback of thousands of guns. This led to s steady decline in murder rates and much lower gun related deaths then the United States. Gun rights advocates often talk about the non gun related violent crime in the U. K. As a reason as to why gun control is useless but there is no way to get round the fact that there are fewer gun related deaths, Fewer mourning families and fewer lives lost.
Or if you do not want to ban guns completely you need a much stricter procedure to go to in order to have one.
In 2014 japan only had 6 gun related deaths. They haven"t banned all guns. People can own shotguns and air rifles but not handguns or anything like assault rifles. To even have access to a gun you need to go through a extremely strict procedure.
1. Have to go to a class and pass a shooting test and in addition to this a written exam
2. Authorities will check your mental state and your recent drug tests
3. Your colleagues and family members will be interviewed about you
4. Police will come to your home to check that your are actually storing your guns in the safe place you said you would.
5. You have to re apply for your licence every three years.

I think that something like this would be good for America as that way people could own guns but hopefully it would ensure that crimson are not able to access them.
Posted by darkwolf 3 years ago

But either way, It still shows that gun control doesn't work, Because just because a country is 3rd world doesn't mean that its lawless
Posted by darkwolf 3 years ago

Venezuela isn't considered a third world country an example of a third world country would be like say Nigeria, But everything else you said was right I'll find another example
Posted by dustryder 3 years ago
dustryder
It's hardly a perfect example if you're comparing a third world dictatorial country on the verge of collapse to a country that is none of those things. A better comparison would be to other stable 1st world countries.
Posted by darkwolf 3 years ago

I'm saying the ban wouldn't do any good, Because if you look my last post it shows that even in a country where private ownership of guns is banned they still have the second highest homicide rate of any country address that please. Because that is a perfect example of the pointlessness of banning guns it won't change anything.

I understand that it is not likely that America will ever completely get rid of guns. I accept that. However, 96 Americans are killed everyday due to gun crime and hundreds more are injured. These statistics include 456 children aged 0-11. Maybe not ban guns completely but something big needs to be done. The gun control you have at the moment is clearly not working and gun crime is increasing more and more everyday. It is also happening more frequently in schools and this is causing children to fear a place that they should feel safe and comfortable in. I admit I don"t know much about guns, But what I do know is that they are capable of terrible things and nothing is being done to restrict the amount of people who can have access to them. Something needs to change or more and more innocent people are going to die.

You say people will just find another way to kill but does that mean we should just do nothing about what is going on now? Leave gun laws as they are and just hope that people will stop killing? If we shouldn"t ban guns completely then what should be do because America can"t keep going like this.
