I accept. I hope you are joking, and don't actually believe that Canada is a state.
Debate Round No. 1

Definition of state:
a : a politically organized body of people usually occupying a definite territory; especially : one that is sovereign

Criteria for a statehood:
The Montevideo Convention on Statehood of 1933 sets out several requirements for Statehood. The criteria of the convention are: (1) a permanent population, (2) a defined territory, (3) government and (4) the capacity to entire into relations with other States.

1. Canada has a permanent population of 36 million.

2. Canada occupies land north of the United states.

3. Canada has a defined government, it recognises Queen Elizabeth as head of state and has a Parliament.

4. Canada engages in diplomacy with many countries.

The country of Canada meets all these criteria for statehood, therefore Canada is a state.

I await my opponent's response.

"The second largest country in the world, Canada comprises the northern half of the North American continent, bordering with the USA to the south and north-west (Alaska). It is bounded by three oceans: the Pacific to the west; the Arctic to the north; and the Atlantic to the east. Indented shores and numerous islands (some very large) give it the longest coastline of any country at 202,100 km. Cape Columbia on Ellesmere Island is 768 km from the North Pole."

Canada and other countries identify it as a country, therefore it is a country and not a state.
Debate Round No. 2

Canada is a country, but it also meets all the criteria of a state.

My opponent is committng a black and white fallacy and saying that Canada can only be a country or a state, when in reality it is both.

The UN recognizes Canada as a member state.
