This debate will be about whether or not Islam is a religion of peace using only the Quran and the Sahihain (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). Round 1 is for acceptance. No ad hominem, no bashing, and no harassment. Thanks, and good luck.
Debate Round No. 1

In the name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful.

I thank my opponent for accepting this debate. My stance in this debate is that Islam is a religion of peace.

I'dfirst like to quote a couple verses which clearly define in which cases Muslims are allowed to fight or kill in the only cause they are permitted to fight or kill in: the cause of Allah.

Quran 2:190-"Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors.

Quran 42:39-43- "And those who, when tyranny strikes them, they defend themselves, And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah . Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers. And whoever avenges himself after having been wronged - those have not upon them any cause [for blame].

Quran 4:75- "And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, "Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?"

Quran 6:151- "Say, "Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. [He commands] that you not associate anything with Him, and to parents, good treatment, and do not kill your children out of poverty; We will provide for you and them. And do not approach immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed. And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason."

As evidenced by the aforementioned verses, the only cases in which Muslims are allowed to engage in combat are in cases of self-defense, cases in which there is an oppressor who is oppressing his people, or cases in which believers are allowed retribution against a tyrant. All three cases are cases in which combat is justified.

There is not a single verse in the Quran or the Hadith which permits or promotes the killing of innocent disbelievers. In fact, it promotes the opposite.

Quran 8:60- "Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly."

Quran 9:6- "And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah . Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.

The killing of women, children and the old is highly forbidden as well.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 004, Book 052, Hadith Number 257:

Narated By 'Abdullah : During some of the Ghazawat of the Prophet a woman was found killed. Allah's Apostle disapproved the killing of women and children.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Hadith Number 258.

Narrated By Ibn 'Umar : During some of the Ghazawat of Allah's Apostle a woman was found killed, so Allah's Apostle forbade the killing of women and children.

Sahih Muslim Book 19, Hadith Number 4319.

It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah that a woman was found killed in one of the battles fought by the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). He disapproved of the killing of women and children.

Sahih Muslim Book 19 Hadith Number 4320.
It is narrated by Ibn 'Umar that a woman was found killed in one of these battles; so the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) forbade the killing of women and children.

When Jihad is mentioned, most people automatically think of a terrorist action in the name of Allah, or the Holy War prescribed upon disbelievers by the Quran (which is actually nowhere to be found in the Quran itself). According to the Quran and Hadiths, this is not true. Jihad is primarily the act of striving and struggling against one's own desires, and is also applied in the Quran to disbelievers (Quran 29:6).

Sahih Bukhari Volume 8, Book 73 Number 3:

A man said to the Prophet, "Shall I participate in Jihad?" The Prophet said, "Are your parents living?" The man said, "Yes." the Prophet said, "Do Jihad for their benefit."

Quran 22:78- "And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him."

In regards to matters other than warfare and combat, the Quran and Hadith also include other peaceful aspects. For example, slavery, while not explicitly abolished in Islam, is highly discouraged, while the freeing of slaves is highly encouraged, as well as mandatory good treatment towards them.

Quran 2:177- "Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah , the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous."

Quran 4:92- "And never is it for a believer to kill a believer except by mistake. And whoever kills a believer by mistake - then the freeing of a believing slave and a compensation payment presented to the deceased's family [is required] unless they give [up their right as] charity. But if the deceased was from a people at war with you and he was a believer - then [only] the freeing of a believing slave; and if he was from a people with whom you have a treaty - then a compensation payment presented to his family and the freeing of a believing slave. And whoever does not find [one or cannot afford to buy one] - then [instead], a fast for two months consecutively, [seeking] acceptance of repentance from Allah . And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise."

Quran 9:60- "Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allah . And Allah is Knowing and Wise."

Quran 5:89- "Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be grateful."

Quran 58:3- "And those who pronounce thihar from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and Allah is Acquainted with what you do."

Quran 90:10- "And have shown him the two ways? But he has not broken through the difficult pass. And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? It is the freeing of a slave. Or feeding on a day of severe hunger. An orphan of near relationship. Or a needy person in misery."

Sahih Bukhari Volume 3, Book 46, Number 695 : The Prophet ordered us to free slaves at the time of solar eclipses.

"When the slave of anyone amongst you prepares food for him and he serves him after having sat close to (and undergoing the hardship of) heat and smoke, he should make him (the slave) sit along with him and make him eat (along with him), and if the food seems to run short, then he should spare some portion for him (from his own share) ". 4097. (Translation of Sahih Muslim, The Book of Oaths (Kitab Al-Aiman), Book 015, Number 4096)"

As I don't have too much time left, I'll have to end it here.
