With the recent terrorist attacks, many people have come to a conclusion that Islam is, indeed, a religion full of violence and killings. Many justify that, by using verses from the Quran that call for the killing of infidels.

I'm against that idea. Just because people commit terrorist attacks, it doesn't prove that the religion calls for them. Men commit the largest number of crimes and the simple explanation for that is this chemical in their brain which makes them more violent than a woman. There are billions of men, who have that chemical in their brain as well and still haven't committed a crime once in their life. We can't blame the crime for that since there are many factors to take into consideration when studying the reason they commit a crime.

Islam forbids killings of innocent people, and terrorist do kill innocent people. So we can fairly say that they do go against the religion of Islam when killing people.

In Muslim countries, crimes are happening and very scary crimes I mean. But it's because the majority of those are 3rd world countries. In non-Muslim 3rd world countries, same terrible crimes happen. So we can see, that this is a thing of education, poverty and so much more.

I thank my opponent for this opportunity to debate him.
The resolution before us is, "Is Islam a religion of violence?"
Do we blame the religion for terrorist attacks committed by some of it's followers? I would answer no to this in agreement with my opponent. I also agree that we have other factors that fit in with the religion of violence.
I propose that we look at the Muslim sources to see if Islam really is a religion of violence.
Question 1: How do Muslims view themselves according to the Qur'an?
Surah 3:110 "You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah . If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient."
Question 2: How do Muslims view people who do not believe in Islam? Surah 98:6"Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures."
Question 3: Are Muslims commanded to fight those who disbelieve?
There are several places we can go to in the Qur'an for this.
Surah 9:5 And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Surah 9:29- 33 Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture - [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled. The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allah "; and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allah ." That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved [before them]. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded? They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah, and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary. And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him. They want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah refuses except to perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it.It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although they who associate others with Allah dislike it.
Surah 9:73O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.
Surah 9:111 Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah ? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment.
Surah 48:19 Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah ; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty from Allah and [His] pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is as a plant which produces its offshoots and strengthens them so they grow firm and stand upon their stalks, delighting the sowers - so that Allah may enrage by them the disbelievers. Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward.
Question 4: Can Muslims be friends with unbelievers?
Pikthall Surah 5:51 O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. He among you who taketh them for friends is (one) of them. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.
Question 5: Is anyone innocent according to the Qur'an?
Surah 5: 72-73 They have certainly disbelieved who say, " Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers. They have certainly disbelieved who say, " Allah is the third of three." And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
Surah 3:13 And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, "O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah . Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice."
Surah 4:36 Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.
Surah 4:48 Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.
This is the unforgivable sin of shirk which is worshiping someone other than Allah or associating partners with Allah

If you want to figure out what a religion teaches, go to it's sources and examine them to figure out if a religion is indeed violent.
Debate Round No. 1

Thank you. And that's an interesting reply.

How do Muslims view themselves according to the Quran?
Indeed, God does see us as those who believe in him and do righteous deeds. "You enjoin what is right and forbid what's wrong", here we can see that it refers to those who actually do that. A person who calls himself Muslim, yet does a so called "honor killing", goes against the teachings of God altogether and doesn't enjoin what's right but instead promotes it.
The people of the scripture refers to the Jews and the Christians, who, of course, are considered believers according to Islam. UNLESS someone believes Jesus is God, which does go against the teachings of Islam because God is one.

How do Muslims view people who do not believe in Islam?
That isn't how Muslims view them, that's how God views them. The Quran is considered to be God's words. And yes, according to Islam those who don't believe in the oneness of God will go to Hell. But Muslim doesn't mean "those who follow every rule of the Quran". Muslim is someone who fully submits to the will of God. If you believe in the oneness of God, but you're a Christian, chances are that you will go to Heaven. Because according to God, you are a Muslim then. Same goes for a Jew. Because those people believe in God and the greatness of God.

Are Muslims commanded to fight those who disbelieve?

Not quite. Islam isn't a pacifist religion. It allows war, in cases of self defense and killing any innocent person is considered a great sin. Those specific verses refer to the war that happened during the time Prophet Muhammad lived. The people had attacked him and his people, humiliated him and even killed his own people. So the war happened. Islam allows war in cases of self-defense only and anything else is considered oppression.
Quran 1:192-193 shows us that if the others stop the war, you need to stop too. You're only allowed to fight against the oppressors and not the innocent.
@367; @368; @369; @370; @371; @372; @373;
And if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
@374; @375; @376; @377; @378; @379; @380; @381; @382;@383; @384; @385; @386; @387; @388; @389; @390;
Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah . But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors

Can Muslims be friends with unbelivers?
Of course, they can, but not in situations of war. It's not allowed and for obvious reasons. Like God says in the Quran, you're forbidden to befriend those who fight you because of your faith and opress you.

As for such [of the unbelievers] as do not fight against you on account of [your] faith, and neither drive you forth from your homelands, God does not forbid you to show them kindness and to behave towards them with full equity: for, verily, God loves those who act equitably. (Quran 60:8)
God only forbids you to turn in friendship towards such as fight against you because of [your] faith, and drive you forth from your homelands, or aid [others] in driving you forth: and as for those [from among you] who turn towards them in friendship; it is they, they who are truly wrongdoers! (Quran 60:9)

Thank you
I did not mention honor killings in my response. Can you provide me a specific passage where honor killings are prohibited? How do Muslims view people who do not believe in Islam.
Islam is submission to God and logically Muslims should have the same views that God has if they should submit to him. Muslims believe in the Qur'an but do not follow every rule of the Qur'an because they cannot. Just like Christians like myself believe in the Bible and have biblical vies but we cannot follow every biblical commandment as Romans 3:23 says all have sinned.
Are Muslims commanded to fight those who do not believe in Islam?
Surah 9 is the last major section of the Qur'an revealed. There is a doctrine called abrogation. Shakir Surah 2:106 "Whatever communications We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or like it. Do you not know that Allah has power over all things?" If there are two passages one teaches to fight offensively and one teaches to fight in self defense the only question we would need to ask is which one came later? Since Surah 9 is the last major section of the Qur'an revealed then it's the final marching orders to Muslims. Even granting these passages, the terrorists do believe that the y are defending themselves against the west.

Can Muslims be friends with unbelievers?
When was Surah 60:8-9 revealed?
TafsirAlJalalayn 60:8
God does not forbid you in regard to those who did not wage war against you, from among the disbelievers,
on account of religion and did not expel you from your homes, that you should treat them kindly (an
tabarruhum is an inclusive substitution for alladhTna, 'those who 7 ) and deal with them justly: this was
[revealed] before the command to struggle against them. Assuredly God loves the just.

This means that this was abrogated by Surah 9.

Religion is nothing more then a bad idea. Violence is an action committed by people. However if a religious authority wants good people to hate and commit violence, then you need a religion that justifies hate and violence, like Islam and Christianity. This is why religious fundamentalism is so harmful, because of it's certainty. After all, the gods of the Koran and the bible are not moderates they are hate-filled violent killers, and they ask the same of their followers.
